Two days later, Jacob met David at the diner for breakfast. Over pancakes, he told David heâd broken up with Claire.
âMaybe I should ask her out,â David said.
âThatâs not a good idea.â
âWhy? You donât think she would have me?â
âI have no idea, but if she did go out with you, and things went sideways, she turns into a terror.â
âWhat happened?â
Jacob gave him a cleaned up version of Claireâs tantrum.
David stared at him, his fork poised midway between his plate and his mouth. A piece of pancake began losing its grip on the fork. A moment later, the pancake tore and fell into a puddle of syrup. âDo you think sheâll sabotage your job? Or mine?â
Jacob shook his head. âHenry has a lot of respect for me.â He was confident, more than he sounded because he didnât want to explain why he was so certain. There was no way Henry would risk the damage Jacob could do if they had a falling out. Even aside from that, Henry relied on him for errands that were too sensitive for others. Jacob still handled the bank deposits for the legitimate businesses. No, he was confident Claire could spin into a frenzy, and Henry would simply turn away.
âI donât know. Thatâs a pretty definite threat,â David said.
âDonât worry about it.â
âMaybe you should be more worried. Maybe you should be thinking about how to get the upper hand, make the first move.â
âWhat kind of move? What are you talking about?â
âSolidify our positions. Maybe tell Henry she needs to be locked up.â
âIt was a temper tantrum, sheâs not insane.â
âIt sounds pretty crazy to me,â David said. He cut a wedge out of the pancakes and stabbed his fork into the bite-sized stack.
âShe was emotional, thatâs all.â
âAre you sure?â
Jacob nodded. He was queasy from too much syrup and butter. He pushed his plate away.
âLost your appetite?â
âItâs a lot of food.â
David shoved a forkful of pancakes into his mouth. âWe need a plan.â The fog was burning off, and the sun suddenly shone through the window, surrounding Davidâs face and upper body with blinding light. âIâm serious. We need to protect our interests.â
âOur interests?â
âYes.â
David seemed unaware of the sarcastic tone. He continued shoveling sopping pancakes into his mouth. After a moment, he chewed furiously, swallowed, and put down his fork. âShe threatened you. She has the inside track. She can talk to Mrs. King. She has Henryâs attention at dinner every night of the week. She can even utilize Mary.â
âHow would she utilize Mary? Youâre the one who sounds crazy.â Jacob laughed.
âI donât know. Women have ways. They can be very crafty. You should know that.â
âNot all women are the same.â
âIn that way, yes they are. Just like all men are saps for a pretty girl.â
âThatâs completely different.â
âTrust me on this.â
As far as Jacob knew, David hadnât had more than one or two girls, with long gaps in between where he didnât even ask a girl out. How could he possibly believe he was an expert on all women? As if you only had to read a book and you knew how they operated.
