Half-rotted oak found in Gainesville, Florida

Chapter Nine

The next few days fell into a routine for Izzy. She got up early and went to Sugar Bean for coffee – which was fast coming an obsession, and she was considering asking them to move their business to Florida – and then she spent the day going through boxes. She catalogued antiques, moved furniture around, choked on dust, and found herself smiling when she found some little item from her childhood. The milk glass angels that Granny put out every Christmas especially made her nostalgic, and on impulse, she wrapped them in bubble wrap and put them in her bag. She couldn’t take home everything that made her smile, but the delicate white angels would contrast nicely with her hand-carved oak Christmas tree collection. Or that’s what she told herself was the reason she was taking them.

Izzy hadn’t seen Granny since they’d talked about her mother and father. Occasionally she would walk through an area of the house that seemed very cold, making Izzy shiver. Once she was convinced that she heard someone whispering upstairs, but when she went to check, no-one was there.

She’d left the clown where it was. No sense tempting fate.

After she was finished for the day, she showered the dust off herself while cursing the inadequate hot water and water pressure and counting the days until Matt brought the new one. He’d called and given her prices and she’d given him the okay to order one. The hardware store promised that it would be Monday morning for Matt to bring with him, and Izzy wasn’t sure which one she was more excited about – seeing Matt or having enough hot water to finish her shower every day. Sure, the man was sexy, but was he as fulfilling as a long, hot shower?

After the quickest shower in history, usually with a head-clearing scream at the end as she was doused with icy water, Izzy went to Aunt June and Uncle Elwin’s every night for dinner. Aunt June had invited her, and Izzy just couldn’t say no, though she felt guilty about it. Aunt June was already cooking, she told herself. She always made enough for an army, and when Izzy made noises about taking them all out to dinner instead, Aunt June had seemed almost insulted, so Izzy had subsided.

Izzy mentally shrugged her shoulders and decided to just enjoy the food and the company and not to worry about it. Eliza and the boys were always there, but Jason still hadn’t appeared. Eliza shied away from the subject and Izzy didn’t press her. It was her business, not Izzy’s.

The boys were growing on her. Quill was Izzy’s shadow during her nightly visit. Oh, Thomas liked her, but he was a little standoffish. Quill sat so close to Izzy that he was practically in her lap at dinner time while Thomas kept a respectable distance on her other side. Quill bounced so quickly between little devil child and sweet angel that Izzy sometimes felt dizzy just looking at him.
