After relieving himself of breakfast, he sat on the closed toilet lid, running his fingers over his sore, dry lips.
“Dec.” Emily’s voice hit his ears. But he wouldn’t look up at her. He couldn’t. He was a monster. He didn’t deserve to exist in the same universe as her.
“I swear I didn’t. I mean, don’t know how she…” He leaned forward as his life passed in front of his eyes in a bizarre montage. Drunk father, taking out his impotent rage on Declan’s mother over and over before turning to Dec and beating him…beating him…
“F-f-fuck.” He was shivering now, shaking all over, unable to stop. Clasping his arms around himself he swayed back and forth, rocking and making a keening noise under his breath.
Emily draped a blanket around him as he kept rocking and trying his best to both un-remember and remember at the same time. His father’s red, furious face and fists, hitting and pounding. A broken beer bottle at the bottom of a flight of steps. Blood. Screaming. He clapped his hands over his ears and jumped up, pushing past Emily and heading into the kitchen where his legal team sat drinking his coffee.
“I didn’t rape her. I didn’t beat her. She’s lying.”
Sophie’s eyes were wary as they flickered to the stack of incriminating photos. The white noise filled his ears, blocking the memory of his mother’s screaming, of his own ten-year-old cries for help.
He swept the pictures onto the floor and stood, arms crossed. “Cassandra is a manipulative bitch. A slut, yes, she’s fucked every one of my teammates. I have proof. I think, but listen, she…she had to fake this or something. I don’t know.” He picked the pictures up and forced himself to stare at them. He grabbed Emily’s arm as she passed by him. The quick look of alarm passing across her face made him spit out a curse. “I’m not a rapist. I’m not. I didn’t…you have to help me.”
Sophie patted the seat next to her. “That’s why we’re here, Declan. We’re on your side. But we need to hear your side first. All of it, including the cheating she did.”
“I will, but all you have to do is ask anyone. They were all telling me. And I saw text messages between her and her friends, talking about it. You can ask them, too.” He couldn’t tear his gaze from the images on the photos now. Dropping into the chair, he spread them out on the table in front of him then put his hands over them, as if he could block them like he’d blocked so much in his life.
“But first,” Desmond said, flipping to a fresh page on his yellow legal pad. “First we have to know about what happened to Erica.”
Declan’s jaw dropped at her name. He brushed Emily’s hand off his shoulder and ran out the door and into the yard. It only took him a few minutes to realize that the loud, primal yelling noise was coming from his ragged throat.
