An hour later, they’d made it back to Carr’s Corner, where JD had a couple of options. He could keep going south until they reached McClellan, a street that would take them to the cemetery’s main entrance. He knew they’d come that way later, so he opted to turn east and go through the town square again.

His plan was to go straight to the cemetery, but when they made it to the corner where the Western Auto once sat, something caught their attention. The whole west side of the square had been blocked off and was full of activity.

Carolyn said, “They’re having a farmer’s market. We have to stop.”

He looked in the mirror to see if anyone was behind them at the stop sign. Seeing no one, he lingered a moment to take in the sight. “Well, I guess we could, but it will cut into our cemetery time.”

She laughed. “You’ve just sweetened the deal!”

They drove to the east side and parked by the courthouse lawn, near the old soldier. They walked around the south side of the courthouse because there was activity there too, and JD felt the need to check it out. A truck had backed up to the lawn, and a crew was unloading sound equipment, lighting, and a portable generator for the night’s concert.

“Your old square is hopping today.”

“It is.”

He was enjoying every part of it. While it wasn’t the square of his youth, it had a great feel to it, and he was going to take time to soak it in. The visit to the cemetery could easily be shortened, maybe for the better.

They passed the workers and made their way toward the market. All along the sidewalk and spread across the broad street, people were set up under brightly colored canopies, with others operating out of the backs of their pickup trucks. A few dozen customers were winding their way through the gathering.

JD and Carolyn began to make their way through the assortment of vendors, looking at the crafts, produce, homeopathic remedies, and collectibles for sale as they went. They talked to the vendors and listened to their sales pitches, and JD enjoyed chatting with some of them about mutual acquaintances. The clock was ticking, and the 11:30 start time for the all-school event was getting closer. The cemetery visit looked more and more like a drive-by.

While Carolyn enjoyed visiting flea markets, antique shops, and yard sales, JD wasn’t much of a fan. Neither of them had any intention of buying that morning, yet both ended up doing exactly that. One man convinced Carolyn he had the best honey anywhere, so she bought his largest jar. JD fell for a colorful metallic 3-D wind ornament.

“Where are we going to put that?” she asked.

“I think it’ll look good on our deck or somewhere on the hill going down to our dock.”

Carolyn laughed because the large ornament was about the last thing she could imagine JD buying. She had to admit, it was interesting in its own way, so maybe she’d allow it within fifty feet of their home, but no closer.
