CHAPTER ELEVEN

Sparky was more than happy to look at Haylee’s résumé and, after a brief telephone interview confirmed that she was eligible to work in Nevada, he offered her an eight-week contract to help with the town’s holiday lighting and, in his words, “get the mayor off my back.”

Three days later, she said a tearful goodbye to her family and was on her way to Haven.

Her sister had packed a cooler with healthy snacks and drinks, probably not so much for Haylee as for the babies. Finley had been thrilled to learn that she would have not just one but two babies to cuddle and spoil before the end of March, and she was practically bursting to share the news with someone—anyone. But Haylee knew she could trust her sister to keep her secret.

She was driving to Nevada this time, so that she wouldn’t have to rent a vehicle when she got there. Driving also meant that if she decided this was a bad idea while she was en route, she had the option of turning around—as she considered doing every sixty minutes or one hundred miles—whichever came first.

She didn’t have any concerns about the job she would be doing—she was looking forward to the opportunity to be busy and productive again. No, it was the proximity to Trevor that worried her.

Not that she was going to move in with him. He’d immediately offered, assuring her that he had plenty of space, but she’d declined. Not just because it would raise the eyebrows of every Gilmore and Blake in Haven, or even because she didn’t want news of such an arrangement to make its way back to her father, but because she didn’t trust herself not to fall under Trevor Blake’s spell.

In any event, when word got around that she would be working temporarily in Haven, Haylee fielded several calls from family members with offers of empty rooms. She accepted Caleb and Brielle’s offer.

“This is great,” Haylee said, turning around in the middle of the spacious and beautifully decorated guest room. “I don’t know how I can ever thank you guys enough.”

“You might not be so thankful when Colton wakes you up several times in the middle of the night,” Brie warned.

“I’m happy to help with the baby in any way that I can.”

“We’ll see if you’re so willing at 3:00 a.m.,” Caleb said dryly.

“We’ll see if I hear him,” Haylee said. “I’m a pretty deep sleeper.”

“Colton’s screams could wake the dead.”

“Stop that,” Brie scolded her husband. “You’re going to have her calling the Stagecoach Inn for a room before she’s even unpacked.”

“Here’s a better idea,” Caleb suggested, grabbing his wife around the waist and nuzzling her throat. “We’ll let Haylee stay with the banshee baby and we’ll get a room at the hotel.”

“Now that’s a tempting proposition,” Brie agreed. “Regan said the Wild Bill suite was incredible.”

“Make the reservation,” Haylee said. “Me and Colton can hang for a weekend while you get busy making him a little brother or sister.
