Shannon was given a hint of what she would come to expect when working with Joaquin once she showed him how to make biscuits. He was a quick study. Sharing cooking duties with a man was a new experience for Shannon, because Hayden had employed a full-time cook and housekeeper.

“Would you like to sample one?” Reaching for a fork, she speared a meatball and handed it to Joaquin once the meatballs were fully cooked in the honey garlic sauce.

He plucked the meat off the fork and popped it into his mouth. “Oh, sweet heaven. That is delicious.”

“It’s the sauce that gives it an Asian flavor.”

Joaquin moaned. “I could sit here and eat this entire bowl.”

“You can have another one while I go upstairs to change. Once they’re completely cooled, you can cover the dish with the lid. One, Joaquin,” she stressed as she turned on her sock-covered feet and walked out of the kitchen.

She quickly changed into a pair of black stretchy pants with a matching long-sleeved top and then pushed her feet into black low-heeled booties. Peering at her reflection in the mirror over the vanity, Shannon fluffed up her hair with a small round brush. Earlier that year, she’d decided to let her hair grow because it would prove easier to just style it in a twist or ponytail. The waist-length straight hairstyle that had become a trademark of her former career as Shay was gone.

Shannon opened the armoire where she’d stored her fall and winter clothes and selected an off-white puffer. Spring had put in an early appearance in Maryland, while winter still hadn’t released its grip on the Garden State. While they waited for the meatballs to cook, Joaquin had revealed that the greenhouses were delivered, and within days, the electrical and irrigation systems were scheduled to be installed.

She thought Taylor’s decision to fast-track the restoration was a stroke of luck for her. Now she wouldn’t have to wait a year before she became an employee at Bainbridge House. And each day brought her closer to the dream she’d had the first day she walked into Johnson & Wales as a culinary student. Shannon could hear her grandmother’s voice in her head telling her it wasn’t enough for her to work in a bakery but to own a bakery. That she would never experience ultimate fulfillment until she controlled her own destiny.

Well, Grandma, you’re about to get your wish, because your grandbaby girl is going to supervise her own pastry kitchen.

Shannon found Joaquin in the kitchen sitting on a stool at the island flipping through one of her cooking magazines. He was also wearing black slacks, a sweater and boots.

“I’m ready.”

The two words were pregnant with a sense of strength that made her feel invincible. She’d left home at eighteen to chase a dream, believing if she worked and studied hard, she could become an accomplished actress. She’d fulfilled that dream when she was nominated for an Emmy, unaware her success would be short-lived.
