CHAPTER NINE

AT GRACIE’S ENCOURAGEMENT, Taylor and Slade played three of the frog games first. Gracie won each time. They also played several of the other electronic games, including whacking the clowns.

Hearing Gracie, seeing the joy on her daughter’s face at their antics, eased Taylor’s nerves.

Knowing that she would win, that Slade would quit pursuing their physical relationship, helped calm her fear of how he made her long for things she shouldn’t.

He didn’t seem nervous. He’d been laughing and mostly at ease with Gracie, the kiddie games and with the whole chaos of Pippa’s Pizza Palace. Every once in a while she’d catch him responding a little awkwardly to Gracie’s exuberance, but otherwise he’d impressed her.

“Ready to win Gracie a bunch of tickets?” His eyes sparkled with challenge.

“Oh, yeah.” She was ready to get the game over so they could go home. Not that she wasn’t having fun. Of course she was having fun. Slade was a fun guy. Fun wasn’t the problem. But he wasn’t what she wanted in a man, in a father for Gracie. He’d hurt her, hurt Gracie, if she gave him the chance. That was the problem. Why she’d needed a stronger barrier to her feelings to begin with.

That plan sure had backfired. Gracie hung on to his every word and wanted him beside her for each game they played. She’d even caught her daughter batting her lashes at Slade. The man was a charmer. Age didn’t matter. Females flocked to him and her daughter was no exception.

She ran her gaze over his handsome profile and admitted that he was definitely flock worthy. He made her want to flock, too. If only...

He turned, caught her watching him and grinned.

Taylor rolled her eyes. No need to give him a bigger ego than he already had. If he knew how much she thought about him, about their wedding night and how she wished the way he’d kissed her had been real and that he wanted a month with her to win her heart rather than to have an affair, he’d definitely tease her. Likely, he’d break her heart if given the chance. That’s why she needed to accept his challenge, to beat him at his own game, so he’d back off from pursuing her and hopefully she’d walk away from their marriage without any mortal wounds.

Gracie took the center lane and they watched her play a game prior to their dropping coins into the next lane.

“You go first,” she offered.

Slade shook his head. “Ladies first.”

Taylor shrugged, then picked up a ball and smoothly rolled it down the lane. It dropped effortlessly into the highest point slot.

“Oh, yeah!”

Gracie high-fived her.

Slade nodded in approval. “Nice.”

Unfortunately, her next two dropped into the next to highest point level slot. Frustrated that she wasn’t rolling a perfect game, the remainder went into the same just-below-perfect slot until she ran out of balls.

Her score wasn’t her highest, but it wasn’t bad. She stepped aside. “Your turn.”

“Do you want to do all five of your games first, keep a score tally and then me go?”

She shook her head.
