Kaya used her body as a shield. Crouching over Sarah and Daniel, she and Marlo dropped to the ground as the heat from the explosion threatened to scald them all. A distant siren wailed. A woman in a red dress she didn’t recognise was rushing towards them now through the vineyard, arms in the air, but she kept losing her in the smoke.

‘Arno.’ She coughed, searching the wreckage for him with her eyes. ‘Arno?’ She stood on wobbly legs. Where was Arno?

Fear took her entire body hostage. The siren wailed closer, louder, louder than the crackling fire that was now burning wildly where the car had been. He was still inside?

‘No, no, no...’ Tears flooded her eyes, and burned like the smoke. She scanned the scene for him. Did he make it out? Oh, God...no...surely not...

Then, there he was, staggering towards her, like a superhero at the end of an action movie! All the breath left her body as she met him in the middle of the road and threw her arms around him, just as a fire truck and an ambulance screeched up beside them. Arno let her hold him in a blur of firemen and hoses and paramedics and spraying water; let her inspect him, let her lead him over to the others and sit him by the roadside. He was breathless, weaker than she’d ever seen from breathing all that smoke.

‘I’ll help you to the ambulance,’ she said. His face was black as soot, his shirt was ashen and bloodied. Daniel’s blood?

No, his blood.

‘I don’t need them, I have you,’ he managed, and she stared at him helplessly. Blood was streaming from his hand.

Kaya grappled for the med kit on the ground, hands shaking. Behind them the fire was almost out. Daniel was being strapped to a stretcher, while Officer Marlo seemed to be explaining something to the woman in red, who’d run to the scene through the vineyard. She looked distressed to say the least. The car was now a mangled black wreck, steaming into the bright blue sky. They were all lucky to be alive.

When she got him to the Jeep, Arno slid to the ground at the wheel, catching his breath, pressing the oxygen mask to his own mouth till the colour flushed back to his cheeks again. Her heart made a lump in her throat as she cleaned out his wound, checking for shards of glass, all the while giving the paramedic who approached them as much info as she could about what just happened.

‘You might need stitches,’ she told Arno, when he’d gone.

‘I’m fine,’ he mouthed, through the inhaler.

‘You’re not fine. We should go with them to the hospital.’

He tore the mask from his face. ‘It’s not that bad, Kaya, I’m telling you. I don’t need that.’

She scowled at him, pulling the bandage tighter, making him suck in a grimace through his teeth. ‘Stubborn idiot,’ she snapped, standing up as the tears sprang back into her eyes. ‘You scared the crap out of me.
