The energy had changed, after that encounter with Jerome. Marcus couldn’t put his finger on what had changed, but Eve melted into his arms as they danced, her tension gone. The band played romantic tunes as the nuptial lace heart shadow-show revolved on the walls of the ballroom.

Maybe it was the magic of the night, maybe the champagne. Lights moved over her face as she flung her head back, smiling. He spun her and gathered her close, and when he dipped her, she relaxed into the move with total boneless trust and abandon before he swept her up again. That unguarded moment turned him on intensely.

If he was even so much as a minute alone with Eve, he’d forget all the reasons why he couldn’t do this. He kept on grimly repeating the litany. No vibing at her, no sex hoodoo, no flirting. No charged glances, or tongue-kissing or honey-smearing. No explosive orgasms as she wound her strong thighs around his hips and squeezed herself to sweet completion against him.

The song had drawn to a close. He maneuvered her to the ballroom’s exit.

Eve leaned against the wall, flushed from wine and dancing.

“Marcus?” she asked. “Are you okay? You look almost like you have a fever.”

Damn right, he did. “I think I should turn in. But you don’t have to.”

She snorted. “I’m not staying here by myself,” she told him. “It’s just the hard-core lovebirds out there on the dance floor. I’m ready to head upstairs, too. Shall we say good-night to your grandmother?”

“She went to bed almost an hour ago with Annika. They’re sharing a room.”

“That’s lovely.” Eve scanned the room. Tilda and Caleb, and Maddie and Jack, all clinched and swaying to a romantic ballad. “Looks like we aren’t going to interrupt them to say good-night,” she said with a smile. “Shall we?”

He could do this. Walk to the elevator. Stop at the door to her room. Say good-night. No physical contact, no smile, fleeting if any eye contact.

Shut the door. Then sit on the bed, grit his teeth and breathe.

“Sure,” he forced out. His voice felt rough and cold.

Eve almost lost her balance on the stairs, and he seized her arm and kept holding it. “Sorry about that spectacle tonight,” he said. “Your introduction to the Moss family was a true initiation, complete with intrigue and betrayal. We like to keep things exciting.”

“Everyone made a good impression,” Eve assured him. “Your family is great. What’s not to like? They’re fun, they’re smart, they’re interesting. Except for your weirdo uncle, of course. That guy has issues. What on earth is his deal?”

“They say he was romantically disappointed by Ronnie’s mother,” Marcus said. “She was a lot younger than him. When she was working in Sri Lanka, she had an affair with some guy who was running a MossTech satellite lab.”

“Oh. So they got divorced?”

“No,” he said. “It was worse. There was a terrorist attack. The lab was bombed. She died in the bombing, and so did her lover.
