Avangeline

I know that I need a will, goddamn it! I’m not a bloody idiot. But I can’t make one, not yet. I can’t bear to put down what is being demanded on paper, but if I do not, the ramifications will be enormous...emotionally and financially. What level of hell is this? Sixteen?

I got a postcard today. For just a minute, maybe two, my dodgy old heart skipped and jumped like it did when we were young.

SEVEN

In the indoor swimming pool, attached to the east wing of the house, Eliot sat on the edge of the lounger and watched Soren cut through the clear water, powering his way from one end to the other. There was something about his style, and his focus that suggested he was swimming with a purpose. Eliot wondered if he was aware that he was breaking his self-imposed ban on training.

She’d been in the rose garden when she saw him, fury and fear on his face, exit the manor house. He’d rested his hands on the veranda’s low stone wall and dropped his head between his arms, and his mouth had moved in what she presumed were silent curses. Then he’d disappeared back inside, looking thoroughly annoyed and more than a little off-balance.

Shrugging, she’d continued walking through Avangeline’s garden, enjoying the luxurious beds, the unusual plants and, yes, the peace.

She couldn’t remember when last she’d experienced such quiet. Oh, she occasionally heard the sweet call of a gull now and again, the crash of a wave or the distant sound of a tractor, but what she didn’t hear were those city sounds—the constant wash of traffic, horns, sirens and people being busy.

She’d never felt so relaxed as she did here at Calcott Manor.

She’d been lucky to land here after her non-wedding debacle, to find herself in such beautiful surroundings. She’d already been here for a couple of days and had settled in nicely. Madigan, bless her, had contacted DeShawn’s assistant and reclaimed everything from the apartment she and DeShawn had shared. Most it was being stored in Madigan’s apartment until Eliot could figure out her next steps, but her friend had packed a few bags for her and had them sent to Connecticut. She now had her clothes, toiletries and, crucially, her phone and her credit cards. She could go anywhere in the world if she wanted to.

Knowing that, how much longer could she take advantage of Avangeline’s hospitality? Another few days, maybe even a week? Or maybe she should just ask Avangeline directly? Truth was, the elderly woman intimidated the hell out of her. The previous evening Soren had told her his grandmother’s history, explained how Avangeline had been born into an influential aristocratic family, how she took a smallish loan and parlayed it into a multi-billion international business.

Avangeline took on the business world and won. And when everything changed and she lost both of her sons in a flash, she’d faced new challenges head-on, her chin raised. She wasn’t the avoiding-your-mother-and-ex-fiancé-and-the-world type, which made Eliot wonder if she should return to the city instead of hiding out here.
