CHAPTER SEVEN

Jogging beside Cooper the very next morning, a sense of freedom and exhilaration strummed through Lauren’s veins. Since her time here, May had become June. The morning air was fresh and the sky gloriously blue, the rising sun casting a golden light onto Stone Ridge. This time, she kept up with him. Or rather, he slowed his pace to keep time with her as they cut a path away from the house, away from the stables and barns, running deep onto the property.

She noticed Cooper avoiding the lake and anything that would remind them about the wedding she had planned with another man. Honestly, she didn’t know what was wrong with her. Normally, she’d be freaking out about this: the fact that she was so deeply in the moment with Cooper Stone while still formally engaged to her fiancé. She was going to remedy that as soon as Roger returned. She would break off her engagement in person. She owed him that much. It would be difficult, but Roger deserved to hear from her face-to-face.

Her head was finally clear and hopelessly wrapped around being with Cooper. So she ran on, with him at her side, a smile on her face and only good things in her heart.

Thirty minutes into the run, Cooper slowed his pace. “Ready for a water break?”

Sweat dripped from his forehead onto his T-shirt, his chest pumping hard, but it was clear he was stopping for her. They’d left cattle and grazing land far behind and she’d been struggling on the rocky uphill paths for a time now.

“I can go another few miles. But, sure, let’s stop for as long as you need to.”

He shook his head, mumbling something that sounded like brat, and led her to a patch of shade under an ancient tree. He was a good man. Always thinking about her, enough to slow his regular routine to make sure she was comfortable.

He’d sure given her a workout last night, a wondrous night she’d never forget. This morning she’d woken up beside him to watch the dawn light play over the rugged planes of his face. Blissfully happy, she’d curled her finger around a dark blond strand of his hair. When his eyes popped open, he’d smiled at her, and that one look had been enough to right her crazy upturned world. A few kisses later she’d been sure he was ready for round two, but he’d bounded out of bed and asked her to run with him.

They stood sipping from their water bottles, catching their breath. Early dawn had broken on this high ground, the land all around quiet and serene. Stone property stretched beneath them in all directions as far as the eye could see. From their perch atop this one hill, the ranch house looked miniscule.

Off in the distance birds chirped a cheery hello and soft breezes ruffled leaves on the trees. All in all, it was the perfect place to clear the mind.

She slipped her water bottle back into her belted bag.
