I finally made it back to camp. The shadows had already gotten long, so it had to be getting close to dark.

Scooter turned around from the fire-pit first. “What the hell happened to you? I was starting to get worried.”

“Long day.”

He reached into the cooler by his chair, holding a beer with my name on it. “Lose your ass at the casino?”

“It’s gonna take more than a cold one after all this shit.”

Scooter pulled the joint from behind his ear. “That bad, huh?”

“No man, it’ll make me all paranoid.” I wanted to lay out everything that had happened, but even a burnout like Scooter wouldn’t believe what I’d just survived. “I think I’m ready for bed.”

How much of it was from the drain Mona had put me through didn’t matter. My body was wrecked, sure. But my mind and soul felt like I’d left some part of them behind in that room.

Turning down the party I kinda needed, I nodded at my tent. “The only thing on my mind right now is my sleeping bag. I’ll tell you about it in the morning.”

“Fuck!” Scooter grinned like he got it, even though he had no clue. “Do your thing.”
