Chapter Ten
Letters and Words
The duvet scraped off his back, sending a rush of cold air to his skin. It started to pimple and he shivered as his eyes slowly opened. The mattress dipped and rocked under the flailing limbs of his bedfellow. They were jerky movements, making the covers slip away completely and scrunch in a heap at the edge of the bed. Dan rubbed his eyes as the heel of Micky’s foot jabbed his calf. This was followed by an incoherent grunt. Lifting his head off the pillow, he peered over his shoulder.
Micky was asleep, but he was restless. Much like the first night Dan had spent in this bed. Micky’s leg shot out again with a deep and fearful mumble from his lips. Head flopped to the side, Micky faced Dan while spread out on his back across the bed. His leg jerked again and fists grappled with the under sheet. No duvet remained on either of them, rendering them both naked and shivering in the cold morning air. It was still dark, but the sun was threatening to make an appearance at any moment.
Dan twisted around and shuffled carefully toward Micky. He held a breath, to await any further lashing limbs, then propped up on his elbow and delicately stroked along Micky’s chest. Micky exhaled a vibrating moan as his head scraped along the pillow to face the other way. Dan paused for a moment, trailing his fingers along Micky’s body to his right side and began tracing the edges of his dragon tattoo. Dan could see only the faint outline with the darkness engulfing the room, but he had the drawing ingrained in his memory forever, so he was more sketching from mind rather than sight.
Micky twitched at the touch and Dan smiled, feeling the skin beneath his fingers tingle. He wanted to soothe Micky. To let him know he was there. But he needed to do it cautiously—he knew what Micky was capable of. He’d seen his father. So he edged closer still, flattening his hand against Micky’s skin and leaned in to kiss his chest.
His head was ripped away violently with fingers tearing through his hair. Shoved down on his back, Dan closed his eyes at the sudden impact. He opened them just as quickly and sucked in a breath at the sight of Micky looming over him, arm outstretched with a balled fist waiting to make contact with his face. Dan widened his eyes in horror at The Machine staring vacantly down at him. He wondered if Micky was even awake.
“Micky, baby,” Dan breathed out. He swallowed nervously as Micky breathed heavily through his nose, clutching harshly at Dan’s hair as he forced him farther down into the pillow. “It’s me.”
Micky loosened his grip on Dan’s hair and started to blink rapidly. His breathing evened out and chest stopped heaving up and down. He didn’t say anything. Nor did he relax. He held his stance over the top of Dan and balled his fists, hovering over him in trepidation.
