Chapter Twenty-Nine
I plucked a beer from my fridge and handed one to Harley. The house was dark when we got home, and I was concerned. Tammy was supposed to bring Chloe and be there when we got back. âThey oughta be here by now. I tried to call Chloe, but it went straight to voicemail. Thatâs kids for you; they donât want to talk to anyone.â
âTheyâd rather text.â
âI did, but she hasnât answered yet.â
âI tried Tammy.â He twisted the cap off. âShe didnât answer when I called, so I left her a message. Hope it went through. I didnât have a good signal. You shouldâve had âem put in a stronger repeater while they were installing your security system.â
âAll this is draining my bank account pretty fast. Iâll have one put in later.â
âItâd make it easier to check those cameras we installed too. It takes way too long to download the images.â
âYou getting much off them?â
Harley loved his gadgets and couldnât wait to see what the cameras captured during the day. âSure ânough.â He punched at the screen for a minute, then turned the phone so I could see. There must have been twenty images of cars going into and coming out of Atchleyâs drive. There were twice as many other photos of pickups going down the road. Some pulling cattle trailers, others of trailer loads of hay. In one, a tractor passed. In another, two kids in a four-wheeler.
âActionâs picking up this evening.â Harley used two fingers to expand the image on his screen. âHereâs one shot just before dark. Look here at this. Two guys in a black Toyota sedan. They werenât there five minutes.â
âLong enough to make a buy. Look here at this camera.â Located near our gate, it covered the drive and the road. âThey pulled in and look what they did.â He was right. The sedan nosed in to our gate and a few seconds later, the interior flashed as someone struck a lighter. âThey made a buy, then pulled in here so one of them could fire up a pipe and take a hit. Then they hit the road and fogged it. Look at all the dust and gravel he threw up.â
I tilted the bottle and swallowed. âI canât believe they pulled into my gate to do dope.â
Harley stuck the phone in his pocket. âThis beerâs good, but I need some water.â He put down the bottle and found a glass in the cabinet. He pushed it against the ice dispenser set in the refrigerator door, and the mechanism rumbled without producing one single cube. âYou know, Iâm thinking you need a dog here.â He pushed the lever harder, as if more pressure would help. âWhatâs up with this thing?â
âThereâs something wrong with it. Must have made it mad when we moved everything. Just open the door and get your ice from the bin.â
Ice rattled again as he dug a handful from the freezer. âAnyway, I think Chloe should stay with us.â He turned to the sink.
