reduces your total amount of muscle tissue
increases fat-storage enzymes and decreases fat-release enzymes.
It means that, if you want to keep the weight off, you have to constantly fight your own body’s energy-regulation system, and that you will be hungry for the rest of your life. In the 2018 article published on Huffington Post by Michael Hobbes5 called ‘Everything You Know About Obesity Is Wrong’,fn2 he explains that there is a 0.8 per cent chance of a woman classified as obese achieving a ‘normal’ weight,6 95–98 per cent of attempts to lose weight fail and two thirds of people gain back more than they lost.
This also means:
Your failed diets were never your fault. It was never going to work. You never failed. You and your body did exactly what you were always destined to do. Lose some weight and gain back even more. Your body and your willpower didn’t let you down – the diets don’t work. You work just fine.
While this all may seem as if your body hates you, it’s actually a really healthy sign. If you are ever on a deserted island and your body senses that you are starving, it will attempt to preserve as much fat as possible, so that you stay alive for longer. Which is great, because then you can listen on a loop to those eight albums that you brought.
It might seem strange that diet culture is such a huge thing when it essentially doesn’t work.
But the thing is, it does work – for the companies selling you these ideals, dreams and weight-loss products. By claiming that dieting works and all you need is willpower, they automatically put the blame onto you. The cycle of guilt and blame only ends up with you fatter – and poorer – than you were when you started … and with an even more urgent need to lose the weight and invest in yet another diet. If you own a company that sells dust- or feet-tasting meal-replacement shakes called things like SuperSlimSuperQuickYumYumTasty, the last thing you want is for your customers to lose weight – permanently. You want them to lose just enough so that, after they crash and gain it all (plus more) back, they will come right back to the thing they think worked in the first place.
