Chapter 43

“Do you guys know the way to the train yard?” asked Liam.

“Obviously,” grunted one of the deputies, both his expression and demeanor that of sulky surliness.

“Jeez, dickhead much?” mumbled Liam as they followed the two deputies, hopefully heading for the station.

“What’s it like being a deputy here?” asked Mia.

Both of the deputies shrugged.

“We’re one of the new batch,” answered one of them. “The original deputies look down on us a bit because we ain’t formally trained. But that don’t bother me none. After all, it’s easier to be a lawman than it used to be. I mean, shit, pretty much everything is a crime now, and the sheriff – I mean the Grand Supervisor, allows us quite a bit of leeway. If we say it’s a crime, well then it’s a crime.”

“Judge, jury and executioner,” noted Mia.

The man shook his head. “No, ma’am. Only the sheriff does the executing. Oh, and Harrison, well he did before you shot him.”

“How many citizens have been murdered then?” asked Mia.

The deputies stopped walking and turned to stare at her. “Not murdered, ma’am,” the talker said. “They was put down according to the law. You might think it harsh, but you should have been here before. The place was like a fucking Mad Max movie. Shootings and raping and killing every day. The sher… Grand Supervisor put an end to that. Okay, maybe things got a bit overzealous for a while, but they’se calming down now.”

“So how many?” insisted Mia.

The talker shrugged.

“Bout three, maybe four,” interjected the second deputy. “They’se buried out in the desert, maybe a mile west.”

“Three or four people,” said Mia. “That’s not many. I was expecting a much higher figure.”

Once again, the deputies turned to stare at her.

“Hundred, ma’am,” said the talker. “Three or four hundred people. Maybe more. I don’t rightly keep count.”

Liam and the rest of the group stopped walking. Mia had gone pale, and even Cowboy looked a little shocked.

“Dude,” said Liam. “That’s like ten percent of the population. Fuck me, what sort of psycho personally offs four hundred people?”

Neither deputy answered, they merely kept walking so Liam and the group had to follow.

“That must be about ten people a day from when the laws changed,” estimated Mia.

“Monstrous,” rumbled a voice they all knew, although there was no physical sign of the entity’s presence.

“Who said that?” asked the one deputy, spinning around in a circle in an attempt to track down the source of the utterance.

No one reacted.

“Hey, tell me something,” said Liam after the two deputies stopped looking for the perpetrator. “How come the sheriff hasn’t made use of the steam train?”

The talker shrugged. “Why would he? So we can go to some other shit hole and fight with new people. All we would end up doing is attracting unwanted attention. No, best leave well enough alone. Anyhow, I think the nerds who knew how to work the trains are all dead. The Grand Supervisor gave them all seriously low ranks, so they had little access to drugs or food, and they got to do the worst jobs.
