In the warm morning sunlight, Buck Halliday bathed in a creek, taking care to keep his shoulder dry. On the creekbank, he fashioned a cigarette and sat on the ground, mulling over the events of the last few days. To him, someone was trying to frame him.
But who was behind it ... and why?
He knew he had to find the stage robbers himself to clear his name. He decided the place to start would be Taylorâs Cutting, where the holdup had taken place. He knew the place. Heâd ridden there chasing strays when he had been working for George Tippin. The tracks would be three days old now, but he could learn something.
He mounted up and turned his horse into the creek, riding the shallows for the better part of a mile before leaving it and putting the horse into a gallop across rugged country toward the cutting.
For another two hours he kept to hard ground, so that even if a posse picked up his tracks at the creek, his trail would be hard to follow.
Arriving at Taylorâs Cutting, he dismounted and inspected the site where the stage had obviously been stopped. There were many tracks and it was hard to sort them out. He covered about fifty yards in a wide circle before he came to a clearing. He found cigarette butts and hoofprints, which indicated that one of the men had waited there until the others arrived, and more importantly, their tracks had come from the direction of town.
Halliday returned to the robbery site and started making wide, circular sweeps around the cutting, hoping to pick up more sign.
On the third sweep, half a mile out, he came across deep hoofprints in some sandy soil. Following them, he found that they headed north. He knew from his experience working with Crossed Circle cattle that George Tippinâs land ran out at the hills and swept back toward the east, ending up at the ranch house itself.
Dead tired and weak from loss of blood, Halliday rested for an hour before pressing on again. The tracks were easy to follow now until they joined the main trail.
Unable to determine if the tracks continued on to Tippinâs Crossed Circle Ranch or took the well-used trail to the hills and from there to the border, Halliday headed for the ranch where, at least, he hoped, he could have his wound tended. He was within a half-mile of it and riding slowly in the late afternoon coolness, when he heard a rumble of noise beyond a rise in front of him.
He kicked his horse into a run, and rode hard until he reached a tree-lined gully.
Within minutes, a chuck wagon came rumbling across the prairie, followed by a group of Tippinâs men. Halliday counted off the hands, recognizing Sommers, Alder and Hardin first, then others with whom he had worked. At the rear, looking grim-faced, came George Tippin himself, riding alone.
There was no sign of the Hamlyn brothers nor Deke Seegar. Halliday assumed Tippin
