After another substantial dinner, Linc dried while Matt washed the dishes. The Sound of Music echoed from the living room where Mattâs mum and dad sang Sixteen going on Seventeen to each other.
âI love your parents,â Linc said, putting the final plate back into the rack.
âYeah, Iâm lucky to have them. They want to meet Daz, but Iâm not sure yet. Itâs still early days. Weâre going out at the weekend. Iâd planned to ask if you and David wanted to make it a foursome, but I suppose thatâs not on the cards unless youâve come to your senses.â
Linc picked at a fingernail, afraid of looking Matt in the eyes. âHe texted me last night to say happy Christmas.â
Matt sighed. âWhatâs the matter with you, Linc? I know you can be a stubborn idiot, but you donât usually cut off your nose to spite your face. You put up with Bradley for a year before you dumped the cheating bastard. David hasnât done anything. I spoke to him after you left, and he seems genuine. He cares for you. He said it didnât matter about your reading, and no way would he offer to teach you.â
Linc leaned against the kitchen counter. âI donât know, Matt. I feel stupid. I donât know how to explain it. I gaze at a page of words, especially when the script is tightly packed, like a book, and the words wonât stay still.â He paused for a moment searching his memory. âYou know Millie doesnât drive.â
âYes. So what?â
âShe had lots of lessons until the final instructor told her sheâd never be able to. She couldnât ride a bike either or catch a ball. When she was young people called her stupid. Now she knows she has dyspraxia, but the knowledge hasnât made her feel any better when Rachelâs arthritis means it hurts her to drive. As she says, all sorts of idiots can drive, even ones like me who canât read properly. I had to spend time to learn as many words for the test as I could, and I got extra time. I still barely passed. If someone had read them to me, Iâd have been fine. Unless you suffer yourself, youâve no idea how annoying it is not to be able to do things other people find easy.â
âYouâre not alone. Lots of people have dyslexiaâfamous actors, entrepreneurs...â
âBut itâs not just the dyslexia. Remember, I didnât have reading lessons when I was young either. And of all things, heâs a librarian, for fuckâs sake. His landing is floor-to-ceiling books. He might say it doesnât matter now, but how will he not think less of me?â
âThe same way you donât think less of him because he has one foot and needs to drive an automatic, or because he canât make ordinary pieces of wood into something beautiful. His disability wasnât his fault any more than you not going to school was your fault.â
âHe told you about his leg then?â
âYes, because he said he knew what it was like to try to hide something as he didnât want people to pity him either.
