Emerson stepped out of the camper sheâd borrowed from Lance for the weekend, and tugged her hoodie down past her hips after putting their dinner dishes away. She found herself instinctively looking for Sasha before remembering that the pup was back in Mystic having a sleepover with Ava. Itâd felt strange driving off without her constant companion, but as her eyes found Mari looking all kinds of beautiful and outdoorsy and warm beside the dying campfire, she had to admit that it was worth it to have the little sixteen-foot trailer to themselves.
âYou know,â Mari said when she spotted her, âcamping wasnât what I had in mind when you said youâd prove to me that youâre fun.â
Emerson laughed at Mariâs adorable little pout. âCamping can be loads of fun.â
Mari just arched a brow that said, Yeah, right.
Emerson returned the look as she gave their home away from home for the next two nights an affectionate pat. It wasnât anything fancy, but it had four walls and a roof and its own amenities so that they wouldnât have to use the public ones in the center of the campground, and that was all she really cared about. âIâll prove it to you later. But do I at least get credit for not making you sleep in a tent?â
âYouâre cute, thinking that I would have agreed to this if Iâd had to sleep in a tent.â Mari gave up the ruse and made her way over to Emerson with a grin. She ran a playful finger down the center of Emersonâs chest. âWhere Iâm from, camping means Motel 6.â
âAh. Got it,â Emerson played along as she caught Mariâs hand and lifted it to her lips to kiss her knuckles. âBut, for real, tell me thisââshe hiked her chin toward the trees that framed their corner site and the glimpse of Lake Superior that could be seen through the gapsââisnât, like, a million times better than some shitty motel.â
Mari obligingly glanced at the view, and then sighed as if it were costing her everything to do so as she looked back at Emerson to concede, âThis is a million times better than some shitty motel.â
âI knew it.â Emerson grabbed Mari by the belt loops and tugged her closer, and there was no stopping her smile from widening when Mari didnât even pretend to resist. Between the tournament the weekend before and then work, itâd been too long for her liking since theyâd had time together like this. She nuzzled her cheek as she teased, âWas that so hard?â
âYouâll never know how much it pained me to admit it,â Mari drawled as she looped her arms around Emersonâs neck. Her eyes sparkled with laughter as she pulled away from the kiss Emerson tried to drop to her lips. âCan I help you?â
Emerson chuckled at the sass and traded her hold on Mairâs belt loops for a more secure one on her hips. âI think the question is, can I help you?â she countered as she spun them around to pin her to the side of the camper.
