CHAPTER FIVE
"Perhaps we should go inside and discuss this. Doke. Take the wagon around the side to the kitchen door and unload the supplies that go in the house, then take what's left and unload it in the barn. After that, maybe you should come in the house as it seems we'll be discussing you."
"Yes sir. Right away." I glanced at Susanna and saw the determination in her eyes and in the set of her jaw. I glad she's on my side.
I finished unloading the supplies, unhitched the team and took them into the barn. I fed them the extra grain for rushing them on the drive. I also rubbed them down really good. As soon as I was finished with that, I stopped off at the water trough and washed the sweat from my face. I felt myself looking for any excuse to not go into the house.
I knocked on the front door. The maid, a petit woman with raven black hair and sparkling black eyes opened the door. Her bright white teeth flashed as she smiled at me and beckoned for me to come in.
"Theyâre in the parlor, Mr. Doke. Please come this way."
"Thank you, Marie." I walked into the room. Mr. Harder was seated in an overstuffed leather chair smoking a cigar. Susanna was standing beside the large fireplace. She had a big smile plastered on her face.
"Susanna has convinced me that you're not just another cowhand. She tells me that you're very important to her. In fact, she tells me that even though I gave explicit instructions to you, regarding your relationship with her, youâve been seeing one another for quite a while. I know you both think I'm an old fuddy-duddy that doesn't know anything about young love, but I was young at one time. And I do remember how I felt when I met Susanna's mother. I can't say I'm happy about this situation, but if it's what my little girl wants, then I'll adjust. I plan on you having the wedding here at the ranch. I'll deed you a 160 acres and build a small house on it for you. You can still work for me until you get situated on your own place. One last thing. I expect the first boy child to be named after me. Do you think you can live with that?"
I felt as if a tremendous weight just lifted off my shoulders. I looked at my beautiful wife to be. Her eyes sparkled as she smiled at me. Would it be proper for me to take her in my arms in front of her father?
âWell. I thought you two were in love. Go kiss her, for goodness sake. I know you want to.â
