20. â MARYâS IDEA
Shannigan went out of the jail and almost stumbled over Lee Swain. The little man halted fast in the middle of the sidewalk, and tapped Shanniganâs arm as he started by.
Shannigan turned and touched his forehead in salute.
âYes, sir?â said he.
Lee Swain stepped closer and looked hard and carefully into the eyes of Shanniganâthe thoughtful stare of a man who is examining a botanical specimen under a microscope, perhaps?
When he had finished his examination, which Shannigan endured with a patient humility, Swain said sharply:
âYouâre no more of a mulatto than I am!â
âHave you got some colored blood in you, Mr. Swain?â asked Shannigan gently.
âI have as much as you have,â said Swain. âAs for your skinââ
He swept his glance over the face of the big man, and then turned on his heel and walked rapidly down the street.
Shannigan did not glance after him. He went on with an immobile face to the hotel, and to the room of Mary Tracy.
She was thereâshe was always there; it was her role to be there, overwhelmed with grief, as long as her âhusbandâ was in any danger.
When Shannigan knocked, a tremulous voice called: âYes?â
He opened the door without further invitation, and found her stretched on the bed, with her face to the wall, and a handkerchief at her eyes.
âYes?â quavered her voice, again. âAre your eyes red, Mary?â asked Shannigan. She jumped to her feet, smiling. âTheyâre not red,â said Shannigan.
âThey would have been before I budged,â said she. âOne rub from the corners to the center of the eyelid will do the trick. Then, one looks down, and keeps a handkerchief near the mouth, and turns partly away.â
âWhy do you look down?â asked Shannigan.
âWell, that puts the eyelashes against the cheeks. And any blockheadâor rather, blockheads particularlyâcan easily imagine a bit of moisture in long, dark lashes like mine.â
âYouâve been adding yourself up, lately, Mary,â said he.
âYes,â she answered.
âWhatâs the sum total?â he asked.
âOh, itâs a pretty big sum total,â said the girl. âExcept for my nose. Confound my nose, Sam. It ought to be bigger. The nose spoils everything. Iâd be a big sum total, but if thereâs one bad figure it makes the whole amount wrong. Why canât I have more nose? You can do anything, Sam. Grow some more nose on this face of mine.â
âAnd youâll be able to catch Reynolds?â said he.
âThatâs the present idea,â said the girl.
âThere are better things than Jack, in the world,â said Shannigan.
âHeâll do,â she answered.
âYou donât need a new nose,â answered Shannigan. âHe likes you the way you are. Donât try to change the picture while heâs satisfied with it.â
âCome here where the light falls on your face, Sam,â she begged. âI never can tell when youâre mocking me.â
âReynolds knows that heâs still only an inch or two from hanging, but heâs more interested in you than he is in his neck.â
âDo you swear that, Sam?â she asked, delighted.
âI donât swear it. Heâs too young to know his mind.
