Chapter 28

By the time Justin reached the primary hold area, his mind had played out several scenarios, none of which were good—such as the princess, like her brother, having died unexpectedly, her body already in the process of dissolving. Or, that what meager signals had been coming from her cerebral cortex had ceased—and she truly was brain dead.

Entering the hold, he stopped and tried to make sense of what he was witnessing. Babar was frantically tapping at a nearby console while shouting a series of unintelligible curses. Inside the right-hand stasis tube, Princess Lena Pietra was fully awake and looking desperate to get out. Her palms went from pushing outward on the inside of the glass to making fists and pounding. She was yelling, screaming at Babar—Justin could just make out the sound of her muted yells.

“Can’t you just drain the thing?” Justin said, coming to Babar’s side.

“No, it doesn’t work that way! There are protocols, safety guidelines.”

“Is there anything I can do to help?”

“Yes, shut up and let me work!”

Justin stood back and watched the desperate princess inside her tubular prison. Her eyes met Justin’s; momentary confusion was replaced by pleading, desperate looks. “She’s dying in there!” he said. Then he saw the droid-bot hovering nearby. “RP9 . . . can you open that tube?”

“Safety protocols require—”

Babar, seemingly just now becoming aware of the hovering bot, yelled, “RP9. I order you to open it—fire plasma bolts into the top of the stasis tube! Do it now!”

A series of bright energy pulses streamed forth from the droid-bot. The stasis tube’s glass exploded outward into thousands of tiny, glistening pieces of glass. A tidal wave of liquid poured out onto the deck, quickly swamping the hold. The princess, now on her knees, was coughing and struggling to catch her breath.

The angelic form who’d previously floated within the stasis tube, her hair a halo of suspended gold around her head, now looked more like a drowned rodent. Her wet hair hung over her face in dark, limp strands. Snot dripped from her nostrils. She then threw up an ungodly amount of green sludge and groaned. Babar was at her side, his hand on her back in a comforting gesture. He looked over to Justin. “Best you wait outside . . . take RP9 and resume your training.”

The princess was now lying, curled up, in the bottom of the tube. Her eyes met Justin’s, and once again he saw her momentary confusion.

“Um . . . come with me, RP9. Let’s do what Babar says.”

Outside the ship, Justin’s mind was all over the place. The implications of this latest development were, well, big. With the princess now awake, and seemingly having her cognitive abilities (although he wasn’t one hundred percent sure about that), there didn’t seem to be the same need for him to travel to this Dow Dynasty place. They would have their actual, real heir to the throne to lead and motivate their masses. He had to admit it, he was feeling relieved.
