Chapter Fourteen

CESARE

“What’s this place?” Mitch asked as I parked the car at the front of the building and turned the ignition off.

“It’s a coffee shop,” I said.

“Doesn’t look like a coffee shop.”

“Because I haven’t touched downstairs yet.”

Mitch had so many questions. I could sense that, even though he didn’t ask them. I loved that about him—how willing he was to wait for me to give him answers without having to pry.

After the meeting I’d had earlier with the Russian mob boss Vlad, I was looking forward to this. To say the meeting had been tense was an understatement, but we’d walked away with a measure of satisfaction on both sides. He’d accepted one of our drug routes in exchange for the territory my foolish uncle had signed over to him. My uncle hadn’t realized that territory didn’t only mean power. It also provided protection for our people, and we needed to own the areas that were close to our operations.

“Come on. When I show you, you’ll understand.”

I got out of the car, and Mitch followed me. When I’d announced earlier I was going out and only needed Mitch with me, I’d noticed my other men had questions. One had even dared to ask if Mitch was protection enough and if it wouldn’t be wiser to bring at least two bodyguards with me.

Not so long ago, I would have snapped at anyone who questioned me to pack their shit and get the fuck out. After Mitch’s lecture this morning, I’d given thought to his words.

Instead of blowing a gasket, I’d let them know I appreciated all the hard work they’d put in, given the recent attacks. I’d assured them I wasn’t going anywhere dangerous and that I needed them to rest up because tough times might be ahead. I’d also called the strip club to inform them I wouldn’t be coming in tonight. I didn’t tell them the reason. That I would be playing with my Daddy.

Being nice wasn’t so bad after all. And not when the incentive was Mitch’s smile and the look of approval on his face. As soon as we were alone, he’d backed me up against the wall and whispered in my ear how long he would eat me out until I screamed for him to stop.

I unlocked the coffee shop, let Mitch go inside, and closed the door behind us. Downstairs was empty apart from a couple of chairs in a corner. I nudged him in the direction of the side stairs. On the second floor, Mitch gazed around.

“What do you think?” I asked.

He walked over to the mantel and picked up a photograph, the photograph we’d taken together at my fifth birthday party when he’d talked me out from under the bed. I’d kissed his cheek while he grinned. He’d made me so happy then, and even now I still remembered the way I’d looked up to him as if he were a superhero.

“It should feel weird looking at this photo now after being in the shower together earlier today,” he said.
