Chapter Twenty
âLetâs sit on a bench and look at the lake for a bit before we go home,â Joe suggested as we walked down the front steps of the old hotel. He took my hand. âPlease? Itâs beautiful.â
âOkay.â
We walked across the roadway and down a short path to an empty bench. Without discussion, we sat close together, and I didnât protest when Joe put his arm around me. It felt natural.
I leaned into him.
We sat quietly and watched the light play across the lakeâs ripples. A pair of trumpeter swans descended to the water, their entry a bit ungainly. They swiftly transformed into the regal birds they were, their damp white feathers glistening in the end-of-day rays.
âI believe things occur for a reason,â Joe said. âCall it serendipity, the Universe, or God, something or someone is put in your path to teach you if you allow it.â
âAnd what do you have to teach me?â I asked.
âPossibilities.â
âWhat do you mean by that?â
His hand clasped my shoulder. âIâm really sorry your marriage was so unfulfilling,â he said.
âItâs over now. No use dwelling on it,â I said.
âIf youâre still using it to guide your future actions, then it isnât over yet.â
âThereâs nothing wrong with using past experiences to guide future decisions,â I replied, shifting away from him.
âThat sounds a little too âDr. Philâ for my taste,â Joe said with a laugh. âIâm not saying itâs wrong, but I think itâs a little simplistic. You told me you donât want another relationship because you had a bad one, right?â
âAnd because the odds arenât good of doing any better. Youâve seen the statistics. You know the divorce rate.â
âSo all men are off limits because Larry was a bad apple.â
âWell â¦â It didnât sound logical when Joe put it like that. I grinned up at him. âYouâre not the same. But Iâm not ready to get back into the reality. You know: socks on the floor, cap off the toothpaste, toilet seat up, inability to cook anything beyond toast.â
âNice try, Di.â Joe wasnât smiling. âWhat is it? Really.â
I swallowed.
âIâm scared, Joe. I know who you used to be, but we were kids then. You seem solid now, but people get really good at hiding things as they get older.â
âYou mean I might be a big bad serial killer lying in wait for you to commit to me, then Iâll take you off and torture you?â
I shook my head. âOf course not.â I peered up at him from under my thinning lashes. âAre you?â
He roared with laughter.
âDi, Iâm exactly what I seem to be. What you see is what you get. My warts are fully on display.â He pushed a stray hair from my forehead. âAnd what I am is a man whoâs been in love with you my entire life.â
He tilted my face toward him and kissed me. It wasnât a passionate kiss, more the dot at the end of his sentence.
I let out a breath, then turned away. Iâd planned to make it perfectly clear
