TEST RUN

In the morning, after a bit of breakfast, we were back on the road with Kovis. He’d managed to hire some men to retrieve the horses we’d left behind, selling them off to the local trader to help recoup some of the profits he’d lost with the bandit attack. Thanks to my abilities with spatial magic, though, we’d kept our caravan small to hopefully prevent any future bandit attacks.

Per our job as hired guards, we rode ahead of his wagon, but for the most part, it had been a very peaceful morning. I was still slightly exhausted from the night before with Alex and Syl, but I couldn’t say that it wasn’t a wonderful exhaustion.

The hours wore on as Nassos rose higher in the sky, and by the time the sun was fully overhead, it was time for my break. I’d tried to make up for the day before by taking over a shift for everyone, so by the time we stopped for lunch, I’d been driving for almost six hours straight.

I was worn out from the lack of sleep the night before as well as stiff from the drive, but I had an appointment with Jasmine, so I hastily scarfed down some trail rations and then went to the wagon to call her.

I pulled out the scrying mirror and made sure a fresh rune was placed within it. When it was slotted into the back of the mirror, I pulled at the mana inside it and then stuck the mirror into the stand that came with it, leaving my hands free.

The silver sheen of the mirror wobbled and then went black before once more revealing the Archon’s bedchambers to me. However, to my ever-so-slight disappointment, Jasmine wasn’t in the middle of changing this time.

Instead, she sat in front of her vanity in casual clothes, a book in her hand. It was one that I recognized: Advanced Rune Theory. I had a copy as well, but it hadn’t been that helpful thus far—not nearly as much as the journal of the crazed runesmith, at least.

But perhaps Jasmine will get more use out of it than I did.

She looked up from her book as everything came into focus. “Good afternoon, Nico.”

“The same to you. How’s your day been?”

She snorted and closed her book with a thud. “Oh, I don’t think you want me to get into that.”

“Sure, I do.”

Jasmine blinked, the molten light in her abyssal eyes vanishing for a moment before she opened them and smiled. “Well… if you don’t mind.”

She launched into a small tirade, venting about her ministers and the High Council. It went on for several minutes, and I did nothing more than add in some polite nods and grunts at the appropriate times to make sure she knew I was listening.

It seemed to me that she didn’t really have that many people she could be completely honest with, and I was the person she’d chosen as her confidant.

Though, I was fine with it.

I rather liked
