Tattoos

Tattoos are made by injecting ink into skin. Unlike henna designs or other forms of makeup, they are permanent body art. From what we can tell from art and mummies, tattoos have been around for a very long time. For example, the mummy Amunet (a priestess) has them, and there are pictures of Queen Nefertiti with a tattoo on her arm.

Plenty of cultures all over the world use tattoos for a variety of reasons. But like many things, we can only guess at their significance in ancient Egypt. Given their use of amulets and spells, the ancient Egyptians probably believed tattoos had protective or other magical powers. What we do know is that tattoos appear to be something only females had. We also know that, at least early on, tattoos were not pictures but dashes, dots, lozenges (diamond shapes), and other geometric shapes. The first known tattoos of an image are from pictures of dancers who had the god Bes tattooed on their thighs.
