Chapter Twenty-Six

Someone was crying. That was what woke Grayson up at one in the morning. He had hoped that he was still dreaming, so at first he ignored it. The crying became more severe though. It sounded more realistic. Grayson opened his eyes. His room was dark but there was a light shining through under his door. The crying suddenly became a sharp squeal.

“Does it hurt?” Grayson heard his father ask.

Grayson sat straight up in bed. He heard a woman sob, and his father chuckle.

“Shit,” said Grayson under his breath.

Without making much noise, Grayson managed to carefully open his door, tiptoe down the hallway, and peep into the living room. No one was there. Blood was in puddles on the floor though. Anxiety already caused Grayson to lose his nerve. He had waited for his father to finally return home, but he didn’t care for any of this.

A hand tapped Grayson’s shoulder. It made him jump and gasp. He turned around, and saw his father standing over him, shirtless and bloody.

“Well, did I spook you?” asked Robert.

“Where did you come from?” demanded Grayson.

“The bathroom. I have a special friend here with me tonight, but she could really use a tampon.”

Robert laughed and laughed.

Grayson was outraged. “That’s not funny, Dad!”

“Oh, lighten up, would you? I’m having a good time. I’m enjoying life. What are you doing?”

“I was sleeping.”

“When you’re sleeping, you’re boring. Haven’t I woken you up from your sleep before to do something a little more interesting?”

“Yeah, Dad, you have. Twice. You have tried to choke me, and you have tried to drown me.”

“Fun times, huh, son? Hey, since you’re up, do you want to have some more fun with me? A father and son deal? My special friend is still alive, for the moment.”

“And I want her to stay alive, Dad.”

“What?” Robert looked disappointed in Grayson’s answer.

“I want her to stay alive. Please, Dad, don’t kill her.”

“Why not?”

“Why not? Really, Dad? Why not? Because she’s a human being, Dad!”

Robert didn’t understand. “What’s your point?”

“My point? My point is, murder is wrong, Dad!”

“The only thing that is ever wrong is when a man denies himself what truly makes him happy. Otherwise, what’s the point of life? I’m doing what makes me happy. This is how I run my life.”

Grayson felt like God was pinching his organs, for his stomach cringed so bad. “Murder makes you happy?”

Robert could only smile and glow. “Yes! And I want to show you what I have done with this girl so far. She’s so bloody and miserable, she’s delicious! Come on, son. Come share this experience with me. It’s more fun with you around.”

“It’s no fun for me.”

“One day, you will understand. You are my firstborn son. It is my job to make you a man. Now, come with me. You must experience this!”

Robert was almost skipping down the hallway with joy as they headed on to the kitchen. There were more puddles of blood. Grayson hated the sight of it. He hated the smell of it.
