Oh, you strange pelican,

Avis infernalis,

Underground hurricane,

Stella borealis.

Silver pallid Moon,

Shining bait,

In final doom to swoon

At your gate.

etc., etc.

― Of course, it’s not exactly socialist realism, and even without some of the more explicit verses, these days it might be enough to send one on a ‘pleasure cruise’ to that Archipelago. xxiii

― Yet, the devil knows, it’s not as bad here as it was, or perhaps still is, in the ‘you-SS-are’.59

― The Monster doesn’t seem to worry about it.

― Why should he, he has worse things to hide.

― If he needs to, of course. THEY are allowed to do anything.

― The Monster is a decadent intellectual all right, but that was clear from the start. That doesn’t surprise anyone.

― But who wrote it out and bound it so nicely for Him?

― Or did He do it personally?

Zderad remembers hearing about similar things being done for SS-men in Nazi concentration camps by various artists and artisans.

― So—that’s the most likely explanation, and it’s even clearer from this that He must be one of Them.

― Of course, that was always obvious, especially after that Hamouz business.

― And if that is the case—the parallels between the previous and the present Joyful Reality are almost flawless—what must that parchment be made of ... and the binding? (Eugh!)

― (Oh, surely not?)

― What do you know about it, twit!

Zderad is literally afraid of the little book.

And afraid to burn it.

Now it’s at the bottom of the literary trunk.

― Rest in peace!
