Chapter Eleven
“I’ve come for the sheets.”
Garran’s rough brogue was an unwelcome interruption to a pleasant dream. Mary rolled over and moaned as her head started to pound. Her mouth tasted like the inside of a shoe. She froze as her elbow landed against something warm.
“Get the hell out, Garran.”
That order snapped through the air above her ear, which meant what was behind her was Graham. As unobtrusively as possible, she pulled the sheet up over her shoulder. She’d have pulled it over her head if she could have, but the heavy weight on her hip was Graham’s hand and he was holding her in place. Mary did her best not to remember the events of the night before. They weren’t the kind of things a woman wanted to remember when another man was standing in the room while she lay naked with her husband the morning after her wedding. Dear Lord, just thinking about it had her moaning inside.
Garran folded his arms across his chest. “I’m not leaving until the sheets are presented as is proper,” he repeated stubbornly, with a look in his eyes that appeared almost maliciously expectant.
With that look Mary suddenly understood why Garran wanted to see those sheets and her embarrassment turned in a flash to anger. Who was Garran to be questioning her purity? That was her husband’s concern, and as her husband was also her laird, none other’s. Mary waited for Graham to say something, but beyond the rasp of his hand over his whiskers, not a sound came from him.
“I thought you got rid of him.”
Graham shrugged. “What made you think that?”
“Yesterday.”
“His punishment was a lashing, not death.”
Viewing Garran with new eyes, she could see he wasn’t standing straight and was pale, but damn it, he was still in her bedroom. She sat up in bed, shrugging Graham’s hand off her shoulder. The time to be gallant had passed. Clutching the sheets to her chest, she tossed her head back, closing her eyes a second as nausea surged. When she had it under control, she met Garran’s challenge. “I’ll give no proof of my purity to anyone but my husband.”
“The custom—”
She cut him off. “You’re not laird here. Your right to demand is limited.”
“I represent the council.”
Mary didn’t care. There could only be one leader and she was sleeping with him. For all that he was being annoyingly silent. Looking over her shoulder, Mary saw Graham was lying back against the pillow, looking like a pasha painted in a poet’s tales. All big-muscled confidence and male beauty. If not for that subtle tension she could sense in him, she’d think he didn’t give a hoot about this conversation. But he did, though for some reason he was leaving it to her. Did he think she couldn’t handle it? She huffed and tossed her hair back over her shoulder. She turned to Garran.
“Unless you represent God, you overstep yourself.”
“That’s heresy.”
“That’s the truth!”
His fingers curled into fists and his eyes narrowed. So did hers. Last night had changed everything.
