Ruby
My years of childbearing and child rearing have been fraught with extremes—beginning with the sudden disappearance of my ghost child; my children’s older sister. Before Sarah, there was Ruby. Ruby, who made front-page tabloid news without ever taking a breath.
Married with Children was into its fourth season and going strong. While on the show, I met drummer Jack White in 1991, a rock star in his own right, thanks to his years with Ike and Tina Turner, Redbone, and Rick Springfield.
Within three months of dating, I was pregnant.
In my first five years of sobriety, I’d had a few short-lived dating situations, but nothing serious. New sobriety. New gig. I wasn’t exactly looking for a new relationship. After the missteps of my youth, I incorporated vigilant birth control into my occasional dating. But I’d had a few sloppy nights with Jack, and boom! Knocked up.
I’d always wanted kids. I never had any doubt in my mind that I’d be a mom. I remember hearing my clock hammering with each passing year. I’d had conversations with myself, confirming that I would parent alone if the right daddy didn’t show up. Finally having steady employment made all of that even more possible. But still, a partner would be the better way to go.
At first, I wasn’t sure Jack was the right one to get that serious with.
Baby kind of serious.
Or maybe he was. I just didn’t know it yet.
Not sure that we were much more than a three-month fling, I was conflicted about the pregnancy. Jack and I were just getting to know each other. It seemed too soon to make anything permanent. Yet we had done the most permanent of all things. We had conceived.
I wanted the baby; I just wasn’t sure about us. We barely had time to have those “us” conversations, as I miscarried at eight weeks. I hadn’t told many people I was pregnant. (I’m half Jewish, and my superstitious half-Jewish side knew not to tell.)
So no one knew, no harm, no foul. My bosses at MWC might have suspected, but they didn’t let on.
Jack and I stayed together. Decided we would keep getting to know each other. And things were good. We tried to not be sloppy about our contraception. Thought we were safe. But then, three months after that first loss, we were pregnant again. This time we were committed. I was absolutely elated.
I was a little nervous, but I told my bosses on the show. I didn’t know how they would deal with my pregnancy. My super-menschy bosses, coproducers Ron Leavitt and Michael Moye, were just great. As usual, they thought of me first, in the same kind and loving way they always considered the lives of their employees before the job. (Amazing guys, those two.) They decided it made perfect sense that Peg might get pregnant and asked if I would be okay with them writing my pregnancy into the show. I thought that was a fantastic idea. So when the Bundys returned for season five, Peggy was with child.
