And then I did get to see Monica drift close to Connie, wrap her arms around her, pull her close—and final image—give Connie a long, lingering kiss.

I had been set up in a not-quite classic lovers' triangle.

But then the curtains were drawn.

For a certain period.

Trie next thing I saw was the master bedroom. It was night. But I immediately knew it wasn't the same night. There was a full moon hanging out the window and, yes, sports fans, two bodies in the bed, at rest, I'm glad to say . . . though I imagined that they might have trysted the night away.

I moved closer to the bed.

My first thought was that it seemed as though considerable time had passed. How did I get here? Was this a dream? There were no bloodstains on the floor. They probably had been cleaned up after the police investigated Connie's quite reasonable charge that her demented husband tried to stab her.

Then I noted how I moved. There was no need for "steps," though my feet did kick and pump.

No, moving was easier . . . now that I was dead.

I realized why.

I held my hand up to my face—just to be sure. And I saw that my hand wasn't quite opaque. No, I could hold it up to the full moon and see right through my hand.

1 was a ghost.

And having been given this second lease on life, I wasn't about to waste it.

In the stillness of that summer night, I tried my vocal chords to see if they still worked in this new incarnation.

"Good morning, campers! Sa-a-a-y, it's a beautiful evening here in the afterlife, and we're here twenty-four hours to bring you the very best poltergeist effects that money can buy!"

Connie shot up in bed and screamed.
