23 Sir Philip’s service would have been to Manuel II Palaiologos (1350–1425), who was the Byzantine emperor from 1391 until his death. The Byzantine empire was constantly at war with the Ottoman empire (the “Saracens”), and characteristically Manuel II died at the hands of the Turks.

24 Henry VI ascended to the throne at the age of 9 months. The “Protectors” were regents who served until his sixteenth birthday.

25 This occurred in 1435.
