“Mary will see to whatever you need for the night.” She told him as she went into the kitchen and toward the back staircase.

“I doubt everything.” A smile turned up the corners of his mouth.

She glanced past him at Mary waiting by the dinning room door. When he looked over his shoulder, his smile disappeared.

“She will accommodate you in every way she possibly can.” Valentina went into the stairwell, pulling the door closed behind her. She waited on the bottom step and listened to the exchange between Nathan and Mary.

“Shall I show you to your room, Mr. Hathorne?” Mary asked.

“Sure, why not,” Nathan answered.

“I would suggest that once in you’re room, you stay there and not wander about the house.” Mary told him.

Valentina smiled, touched by Mary’s protectiveness.

“Why is that?” Nathan asked.

“We’ve mice and they might startle you if you’re on the staircase.”

“Ah, yes. That could be a dangerous position.” His voice faded, indicating they had left the kitchen area.

Valentina hurried up the stairs and waited at the dark end of the hallway for Nathan and Mary to come up the main stairway. She heard Mary’s voice first.

“Then I’ll have no worry of you being out of your room, Mr. Hathorne?”

“Worry? No, I don’t think you have to worry,” Nathan told her.

When he looked toward her end of the hallway, Valentina froze. She watched him enter the room Mary showed him to. After Mary said a few simple goodnight pleasantries and went back downstairs, Valentina went into her room.

Ten minutes later, Mary knocked at her door and Valentina opened it.

“I’ve brought your dress, all repaired, miss.” Mary held it up for her inspection.

“Thank you.” She motioned for her to hang it in the wardrobe. “Mary, I’ve had some urgent business come up and I will be making a trip to Salem.”

“Salem, miss? But you’ve never left the estate.” The surprise in her tome was not missed.

“And if my business wasn’t so important, I’d probably not be leaving now.”

“Business, miss? Maybe Harold can handle it for you.”

“This really isn’t something anyone else can handle.” Valentina walked to the window and looked out at the starry sky. “It has to do with what my mother told me in that letter. She wants me to try and get in touch with family.”

“I see. Have you any idea how long you’ll be gone?”

“No. Which is why I will understand if you and Harold wish to find other employment. I will of course pay your wages for an extended time to give you a chance to find…”

“That won’t be necessary, miss. Harold and I have all we need here. We’ll keep up the place as we have always done.”

Mary’s assurance came as a relief. Valentina had never liked starting over with strangers when it came to tending to her daily needs. “Thank you.”

“Miss Valentina, I know this is not something ever mentioned, but it might ease your mind if you were to know that Harold and I know your secret.”

“My secret,” Valentina laughed nervously. “Whatever could you possibly mean?”

“Harold and I have been here for over twenty years, miss.
