Rob had made a lot of progress. The floor that had been torn up was fully repaired, and the only trace of it ever having happened was that the wood he’d used was in considerably better shape than the old floor.

“Oh my gosh!” Sarah exclaimed. She approached the repaired area and looked uncertainly at Rob. “Is it okay to... you know, walk on?”

He laughed and shook his head. “Of course,” he told her.

She stood on the repaired boards and bounced lightly. There wasn’t a single creak. She could see Rob was proud of this, so she ventured to mention it.

“It’s beautiful,” she said. “It’s just amazing. You’re amazing. And I can’t thank you enough for this.... I just don’t know what I would have done.”

“It’s all part of the job,” Rob said, his face getting a little red. He quickly changed the subject.

“So, I hear you’re hoping to move in here sooner rather than later, but I gotta tell you, if you can give me just a little more time, I can get these floors sanded and varnished, and you’ll have a stunning floor in here.” He looked at the wood again, obviously proud of his own work and passionate about making the floor beautiful again.

“I... well,” Sarah began. “I just don’t know if I can keep staying with people... it’s a little embarrassing, but I’m pretty broke.” She flushed a little. “So I’m not even sure I can afford to -”

She was cut off by a high-pitched sound, and recognized it from earlier that day. Rob held up a hand apologetically and turned up the volume on the pager on his belt. Then he turned it down.

“Listen, Sarah,” he said calmly, as if he didn’t have an emergency to go to at all. “I have to go now.” He was already walking over to a workbench to collect some things he had set down there.

“But I feel sure you can find someone to let you stay a bit longer with them. Emily lets almost any stray animal, or person, stay with her, so I doubt you’ll get any complaints.” He was walking efficiently now, checking pockets, his mind clearly on something else. “You got a key to lock up?” he asked.

She was shaking her head, but he seemed to already know the answer. “I don’t know how long I’ll be, but how about you just close this back door after you leave? I’ll take the key off your tire.”

He was already trotting down the spiral steps, and Sarah agreed with an enthusiastic “Okay.” She leaned over the balcony to watch him get into his car, putting a radio to his mouth at the same time and speaking evenly into it.

She watched him drive off, allowed herself a brief moment of romantic daydreaming, and then turned around to tour her apartment one last time.

The apartment, she corrected herself silently.

But before long, she was imagining the refinished floors, some new paint, a sea of ferns and houseplants, and her own belongings in the space.
