Dani and I were so wiped out we went right to bed, but we both knew that “the talk” was going to happen this morning.

She kicks it off with “That was incredibly frightening last night.”

“I know, and I’m sorry. But you were amazing.”

“I should have said it was incredibly frightening for me. You weren’t frightened at all.”

I shrug. “I was concerned.”

She shakes her head. “You ate it up with a spoon.”

“It’s what I do. And in this case, I could not help myself. This guy was in our home, waiting to kill us. I could not let him stay in there a minute longer than I had to. I’m sorry you had to experience it, but it was the best way to handle it.”

This is not the first time Dani has been dragged into something like this. Last time it happened, she was in great personal danger and barely escaped with her life.

“Did you want to kill him?”

“No, but not because of any concern for his well-being. He had a gun and was going to shoot either me or Simon. But I wanted to find out who sent him. Now we will have to find out another way.”

She gets quiet, so I add, “Look, I don’t want you to experience things like this. You shouldn’t have to be a part of this world. I just wish I knew of a way to accomplish that.”

She doesn’t say anything for at least a minute … a really long minute. Then, “I want to be with you, which means I have to take the good with the scary. It’s who you are and I have to accept all of it, just like you have to accept all the junk that I bring to the table. Like my cooking.”

“That’s different. Your cooking can’t kill me. Well, maybe it can, but it would be my own fault for eating it. And my cooking makes you look like Julia Child.”

She laughs, and the tension is broken … for the time being.

“You really were amazing, especially with the phone message you left. You handled it perfectly.”

“Thank you.”

“What was going through your mind?”

She thinks for a moment. “I wanted the son of a bitch out of our home.”

What I don’t tell Dani is that if one guy came after me, another one might follow. It’s unlikely that killing one guy we’ve never seen before took care of the problem. We’ll have that conversation tonight, when we both get home from work.

For now, Simon and I head to Laurie’s to assess where we are and figure out where we are going. As soon as I get there, Laurie tackles the issue head-on.

“We need to set up a schedule of some kind. When you’re going to be out while Dani’s home, Marcus is going to have to watch your house. There is too much chance that they are going to take another shot at you.”

“Agreed. Dani goes to Vegas on Wednesday for a few days to handle a convention, so that’s well-timed and will make it easier on Marcus.
