They, the two ladies, watched as Anderson closed his eyes while he tried to come up with the best way to begin. They looked at each other often and in some effective but silent way, they reminded each other not to press him for expediency. The longer he had spoken earlier, the more they had come to realize how serious this was and what a toll the events Anderson was about to relate had taken on him. Rose didn’t know Anderson all that well, so she didn’t see it as clearly. But, Anderson’s wife however, knew better with each word that he spoke that this man was no longer the same man that had sailed from Nantucket months prior to this day, and it had naught to do with the weight he had lost, but more to do with the weariness in his eyes. There was a great weight upon his shoulders and he was struggling every moment just to remain upright. Why she had not seen all of this immediately upon his return baffled and infuriated her, she had always prided herself with being able to read her husband. But that would be for her to wrestle with later, now she just needed to listen and feel sorry for him, and be what he needed her to be if it was within her power.

“Neither of you were wrong in your feelings of impending doom, you just weren’t aware of what was vexing you and there was no way that you could have. No one could have. No one would have believed in their own sanity if they had been shown in clarity what lay ahead of the Donna’s Sunrise. There are still days when I find it hard to believe in what my own eyes have beheld.”

“For days we sailed after leaving Nantucket with your fears weighing on our minds. When I say we, I am of course speaking of myself and Captain Weatherall. We shared none of this with the crew. In fact we did not share any of it even amongst the two of us for some time. The captain believed himself to be dealing with your fear all by himself, as was I. Only after a time had passed did we confide in each other your trepidations, but in all honesty we gave it little real concern. We owed it all to two faithful wives who were worried about their husbands and were dreading the missing that was inevitable. Brushing it aside, or trying to brush it aside would prove to be a colossal failing on our part. A failing that many of us who sailed aboard that ship will pay for the entirety of our lives.”

“There are things that occurred that are important to the overall story, but not necessarily crucial, so I will not go into those at this time. God willing, there will be a day when I do not feel so hurried and harried, will be able to sit at leisure and explain every day and its events, but today is not that day.
