( Golden Heart Parade )

There’s a latitude where even whiskey freezes, where bolts snap like chalk and you chop your water from the creek with an axe. Up here, the light is gray and paltry when there’s light at all. No roads or radio, no one watching for flares. You wend your way among the spruce, tread upon flat, unbroken snow. The wind becomes your symphony, the stars your endless theater. Little to do but secure shelter, conserve energy—control what you can, which is only your breath. You might even think you’re the first in all of history to walk this land, but that’s false. Men have died here before you; they’ll die here after. Take the prospector who discovers a vein of pristine ore, only to mark his claim and stumble backward down a mine shaft. Or the Sherpa who in a blizzard walks circles, always tripping over the bodies of his expedition party. The naturalist among black bears, his final field entry observing a rise in aggression. These men were mavericks, pioneers, renegades. Their legends outlast their names. They died from hubris or distraction, or maybe nothing more than rotten luck. These, too, are natural causes.
