Chapter Six

AS HAWK VANISHED over the falls, Alice Cantrell gasped, then slumped to the ground. Jed was dead. There could be no doubt of it. In that brief glimpse she had of him he had seemed so helpless—like a straw being swept along in a flooding street gutter.

She felt Buffalo Jim’s comforting hand on her shoulder and told herself not to pull away. From the very beginning she had been appalled at his deformity, one he seemed to take so calmly, and had tried to dismiss it just as easily; she had no wish to hurt this big, patient man who had at times the simple, honest eyes of a child.

Fighting back the revulsion she felt, she peered up at him through hot tears. “Oh, Jim. What do we do now?”

“We go on. Find your brother.”

“But you’ve been wounded. That arrow left a terrible gash in that … I mean, in your back.”

He smiled, understanding everything. “In my hump, you mean. But that’s the virtue of the damned thing. It takes all kind of punishment without a whimper.”

Alice felt suddenly ashamed. The man’s rueful modesty, his clear-eyed vision of who and what he was, humbled her.

“We better move on right away, Alice. This here ain’t the healthiest piece of land for us. Not right now it ain’t. We better get a move on, I’m thinkin’.”

“Yes. Of course.”

Wiping the tears from her eyes, Alice stood up and walked back with Jim to their horses. Mounting up, they rode north toward the Blackfoot lands and Spotted Pony.
