the Zaldoni Boys

the trattoria

The old Italian section of St. Louis is called the Hill, and on that old hill, the name Zaldoni was—and still is—spoken with a good deal of reverence. As with many families of Sicilian origin, every Zaldoni was expected to participate in the family business. Absolute loyalty might or might not be rewarded with steady movement up an ever-changing hierarchy, but in any case, loyalty was demanded. Family expectations might have loosened somewhat, but in the mid-1950s, a Zaldoni who broke away to start a rival business did so at his own risk, which was why everyone on Thistle Way was shocked, but not surprised, to wake up on the Monday morning after Patsy Warfield’s talent show to find the Zaldonis had moved out, lock, stock, and barrel. They vanished without a trace.
