Chapter 7
Kerri considered the choices that were in front of her and thought hard about the decision. Not that this would be a difficult decision because she knew which one she wanted to get, but she didnât think it would be the one that Jake had in mind. They were all so cute, and she wanted to take them all home.
âSo, which one do you think that Momoko will like?â
Kerri didnât bother to look at Jake who stood next to her but continued to consider the choices. âI think that she would like any one of them for her birthday. But if I had to choose the one that she would like the most, it would be that one.â She pointed to the big brown dog that sat alone in the wire cage. There was something about him that just tugged at Kerriâs heart. He looked so proud and lonely, and his eyes implored her to pick him.
âKerri. Heâs not a puppy. Heâs also huge, and we donât have the room.â Kerri could hear the humor mixed with exasperation in his voice but ignored it.
âOh, please. You donât have the room? Heâs supposed to be big. Heâs a Great Dane.â
âMomoko will be afraid of him.â Jake tried another argument, but Kerri was resolute. It would be the Great Dane that they would bring home for Momokoâs birthday that was six days away.
âNo she wonât. Great Danes are very gentle dogs. We had one when I was her age. They make excellent family pets and are great guard dogs. I told Momoko that I had one when I was little, and she told me that she wanted one, too.â Kerri looked over at Jake and saw him scowl. There was a humorous look in his eyes as he did so.
âSo thatâs why sheâs decided that she wants a dog for her birthday. I can blame you for this. Whoâs going to take care of him? Look at him.â
Kerri could see that he was running out of arguments, so she went in for the kill. âHeâs already housebroken and has grown out of the âneed to chew everything to bitsâ phase. All that you need to do is to show him where to do his business, feed him, give him an occasional grooming, and show him where to sleep.â
âIt will cost too much to feed him.â Jake tried one more argument. He was clearly out of arguments if he was trying that one. She looked over at the manager of the animal shelter and shared a smile with her. The manager knew who Jake was because he was a celebrity and the pride of Matsumoto. She found Jakeâs latest argument amusing, too, but she had the good grace not to laugh. Kerri, however, didnât and laughed at him.
âDo you even hear yourself?â Jake looked down at her and actually looked embarrassed because he had said something so ridiculous. Then he smiled sheepishly, sighed dramatically, and told the shelter manager that they were taking the Great Dane.
