GODZILLA RAIDS AGAIN WAS 1955’s disappointing sequel to the original film.

The film (and Godzilla itself) was renamed Gigantis, the Fire Monster for its 1959 American release—the monster hadn’t yet become a brand. Legend has it that the creature’s original name (Gojira in Japanese) is a combination of the Japanese words for gorilla (gorira) and whale (kujira).

Its success in the States (and later in Japan) led to its being released worldwide—as evidenced by the Italian poster.

GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS! was a bowdlerized 1956 American version of the Japanese Godzilla that replaced some of the original movie’s scenes with footage of Raymond Burr and other actors.
