JARED WIPED SWEATY palms on the legs of his blue jeans and gathered his breath, seeking enough nerve to walk to the end of the hallway, but for a moment, not finding it, he remained in place. He could put this off and wait until tomorrow night to have this conversation with Jim. In thinking that, however, he knew better. He only delayed what had to be said. One day or two wouldnât make this easier.
Exhaling long, he forced himself forward, turning left at the end toward the living room doorway. He halted there, leaning his shoulder on the doorframe, and Jim raised the TV remote and hit mute. The light flickered on his face, shades of blue and gold.
âThat looks like guilt,â he said.
Jared wrapped one hand around the back of his neck and squeezed, but the pressure of his pending revelation didnât release. He swung his hand back to his side. âNot guilt, though I do have something to say.â He fell silent, and a minute passed.
âWell, why donât you take a seat and say it?â
Jared hesitated briefly, then obeyed, perching on the edge of an armchair, his bare feet rubbing the braided rug beneath Jimâs rickety coffee table.
Jim grasped a can of soda and brought it to his lips, his slurp temporarily barring talk. He returned the can to the damp circle where itâd sat.
âYou ainât asked me where I went last night,â Jared said.
Jim reclined, angling himself slightly in Jaredâs direction. âI assumed youâd tell me when the time was right.â
âIâve been seeing the girl at the house ... Holly.â
Jimâs eyes snapped, and his forehead folded. âYou know the rules.â
âI know the rules ...â Jared blurted, his tone defensive. âIâm breaking them because I didnât ask for this. That day you sent me in early for fighting with Simon?â
Jim gave a shallow nod.
âIâm standing there half-clothed, and she walks in. Then that evening I run into her at the Barn, and it seemed natural to strike up a conversation. You know me. When have I chased after a woman? But Holly, sheâs different. She understands me, which is more than I can say about myself.â
His words fell away, and a strained silence filled the room. Jared could almost hear Jimâs mind churn and didnât want to interrupt. Nor did he want to betray Daleâs confidence and mention Colleen Ervin, so he said nothing.
Five long minutes passed. Jim pushed to his feet and strolled toward the photo of his sister. He appeared to contemplate it.
âItâs not a good idea to get tangled up with Mrs. Porterâs house girls.â
âYouâre saying that for a reason?â Jared asked. He wouldnât tell what he knew, but would provide Jim an opening to bring it up.
Jim made a slow turn, and his shoulders sagged. He poked one hand into the pocket of his slacks. Jared stood and approached him. He owed a lot to Jim and couldnât recall ever seeing him quite like that.
âHollace Ervinâs wife,â Jim said.
Jared bit the inside of his lip.
