âWhat? Did I forget something? Oh, right.â He snapped his fingers. âThe hat. Hang on a sec.â He pulled one of the three options down from the top of the closet. âKevin said I could use this one or the bowler with the seersucker, but Iâm going all out dandy with this.â He held up a straw fedora and stuck it on his head. âHow do I look?â He made a full circle and stopped, one toe pointed down, leaning on an invisible cane.
She laughed. âYou look perfect. But back to me ⦠how do I look?â
He had her swept into his arms in a heartbeat and laid a kiss on her that made her have to hang on to her hatâliterally. âYouâll do, I guess,â he said, giving her butt a slap.
âAsshole,â she said, checking her phone. âCarâs here. Leave the wallet, just bring cards, your ID, and some cash for tips and stuff. You can bet using your phone.â
âGot it. Any more tips, Oh, Derby Queen of mine?â
âHydrate.â
He shot her a jaunty salute, held out his elbow, and they headed to the elevator together. Seanâs heart was full of hope and light. It had taken him a full half-century, but he had found herâthe woman of his dreams.
On the way to the track, he checked his phone. He had a shit ton of social media messages, which he ignored. He didnât do any posting much anymore, but everyone whoâd seen him Thursday had tagged him, so the word was outâthe great Sean Ridley was at the Derby this year. But with who? Oh, Roz Ratliff Garnet, ex-wife of his former agent. Juicy stuff, he knew. But he wasnât about to encourage any of it, so he scrolled past all of that crap and found a few texts, mostly from J.D.
He frowned, recalling this whole sexy adventure had begun because heâd told J.D. heâd help convince Roz to work for the Detroit Sports Network instead of for Mason. Heâd better come clean on that, lest it cause unnecessary misunderstandings later.
He had some other texts, mostly from the managers and trainers he now employed. One of them was regarding a strength and training coach heâd been trying to lure away from a college team. I think he needs to hear from you one more time, the woman heâd put in charge of hiring had sent him at some point yesterday.
Iâm sorry Iâm just now responding, he tapped out, taking the hand Roz had on his thigh and kissing it, then putting it on his crotch with a leer in her direction. She yanked her hand away and smacked his arm then turned her attention to her own mobile device.
Itâs a done deal, he tapped by way of a second message. Done and dusted. He knew the coach would come work for him. Heâd been in strength training his entire career and would never get promoted above that on a team. Mainly because he was so completely kick-ass at that job. Sean was ready to pay him top dollar to be his operations manager.
