Go on along the wall of the enclosure. Only a few steps away members of the [5] MONTEITH family are interred here under an imposing stone, boldly carved (and formerly railed off) with the heading that it is ‘Sacred to the Memory of HENRY MONTEITH of Carstairs’ (1765-1848). His wife Christina is buried here, along with a number of her children. She had 14 children in all but only five were alive when she died. The stone was erected by her youngest child, Robert Monteith.

Carry on round the remains of a rusty mortsafe and you will see an empty space on the wall where a plaque has been gouged out. A stone on the outer face of the west inner partition wall, near the south end, marks where [6] WILLIAM FRIEND DURANT (d1821, aged 19) was buried. Durant, a multi-talented student at Glasgow University, was born in Dorset, but came to Scotland for his higher education. A good-hearted lad, he made a host of friends in the city but illness cut him down while he was still a teenager. Hundreds of fellow students and friends mourned at his grave on that fateful November day.
