CHAPTER 39
BUT JUST LIKE YOU CAN’T lead a horse to water and make him drink, Farley Mason and his crew learned that you can’t show up at an old abandoned mental institute and make ghosts tell you their stories.
After almost an hour and forty-five minutes of walking down dark hallways and calling out for the ghosts, we had nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
Not even one ghost.
“Abby, what the hell is going on?” Mason said.
“Well it’s been my experience that sometimes they show up and sometimes they don’t.”
“Yeah, but there were thousands upon thousands of patients who passed through here. I mean, this place is over a hundred years old! We should be tripping over ghosts!”
“It doesn’t always work that way.”
“Man alive,” James said behind us. “I saw something. I swear I saw something down there!”
Mason sighed.
“James, you and Abby are going to walk around on your own for a while,” he said. “I’m going to check with Sarah and Dave and see if they’ve had better luck than we have. But before I go get a tight shot of my face.”
James did as he was told.
Mason suddenly gasped.
“Whoa. I’m feeling woozy and having trouble... catching... my...” He put a hand on his chest. “Dude, it’s bad, real bad. Like someone’s trying to stop me from breathing. I’ve got to get out of here. I’ll be in the control center watching everything that you guys are doing.”
The control center was the van. I had gotten a tour when I first arrived. They had set up TV screens and other equipment inside along with industrial amounts of Doritos, chocolate donuts, and Orange Crush.
James filmed Mason stumbling away and disappearing in the dark.
I only had about fifteen minutes left but had a strong sense that time was about to slow down.
Slow.
Way.
Down.
James and I resumed our search, walking and calling out for ghosts. Ten minutes later, Mason’s voice came over on the walkie talkie.
“Dude, did you just hear what I just heard?”
James looked at me and shrugged.
“Oh, dude, please tell me you heard it!” Mason yelled. “Did you hear THAT?”
“What?” James said, sounding flustered. “Abby, did you hear—”
“Someone just called Abby a whore!” Mason crackled. “How did you miss it, James? I heard it through the walkie talkie. Did you at least get it on film?”
The night was unraveling fast.
“There it is again!” Mason screamed. “Dude, they’re being abusive toward our guest! You gotta get that ghost to stop saying those things!”
“Hey, Farley, knock it off,” I said. “Nobody said anything over where we are.”
“I didn’t hear anything either,” James said.
“Damn it! There it is again. Seriously? You guys aren’t hearing this?”
James was quiet, then cleared his throat.
“Oh, my God, Farley! The ghost just called Abby a whore again! I swear to God! Just now!”
“Hey, this is the last time I’m going to tell you guys,” I said. “Get real or I’m leaving.”
“Do you hear that, Farley?” James shouted. “Man, they’re totally yelling at Abby. They want their medicine and they think she’s one of the nurses who used to work here! They’re trying to.
