“I should go,” GiGi murmured into Matt’s shoulder. He’d gotten up to stoke the fire, but then they’d just stayed here, cuddling and occasionally kissing and not talking very much.

Would he apply for the Okefenokee survey? Could he?

Her phone let out a strident beep and kept beeping. Oh, shit. She reached across Matt to snag it from the coffee table.

“It’s an all-call,” she told him. “Emergency.” Sitting up, she swiped the screen. Matt shifted to sit facing her.

The text on her screen read, To all deputy reeves in the Amarillo area: We have word of a possible ghoul attack planned for Christmas Eve. Please call in immediately.

GiGi punched the number at the end of the text. “Amarillo Ass-Kickers,” a man’s voice said. Since Mundanes couldn’t know about mages, collegium personnel answered all outside lines with aliases. She had to like this one.

“This is Deputy Shire Reeve G.G. Gonzales, posted to the Southeast Collegium but visiting in Colina de Plata, reporting. How can I help?”

“We have an all-call tomorrow at 9 am sharp.”

“I’ll be there.”

“Did you bring gear with you?”

“Uniform and a sword. Do you have spare tactical gear?”

“We can fit you out. See you in the morning.”

The deputy disconnected. GiGi frowned down at her phone as she filled Matt in. “It’s standard procedure to notify the local office when we come into town, but I’ve never been called in before. I’m sure they’re short-handed because of the holiday.

He shook his head. “Ghouls at Christmas. That’s just great.”

The ghouls had long talons that could suck energy from their prey or inject venom. Unable to reproduce on their own, they kidnapped mages and Mundanes, or normal humans, for that purpose.

“Distraction is their friend,” she muttered, frowning. “Mom reads Magewire.com regularly. She said there was an article last month about the Amarillo satellite office decimating a big nest. There was some concern the ghouls might try to rebuild.”

“Which means they need breeders.” Matt scowled at his fireplace. “This’ll screw Christmas Eve. I’m sure your folks will understand, though.”

“They will, but Mom will have a lot to say about ghouls and their timing.” Smiling, she leaned into him, and he drew her close. They settled back on the sofa together. He smelled of something spicy, and he was warm and solid.

“I’m hoping you might make it back here again soon,” he said.

“I’ll try, but we’d have more privacy in Georgia. If you get that grant, you’ll be just down the road for four months.”

A shadow flitted through his eyes, and she tensed. It probably had nothing to do with her. Four months was a long time to be away when so many people depended on him.

“Maybe your parents could come back and fill in for you.” That doubt on his face, though, wasn’t encouraging. “You deserve your dream, Matt. You want to be a nature photographer. This could help you.”

“I’ll look at it,” he said. “Your mom invited Nonna and me for Christmas, but Nonna wants Bella to cook. She thinks it’ll ground Bella, or some such.
