Cyclone Cove's main thoroughfare was all uphill. By the time Henry and Jacob reached the old railroad depot turned horror museum, both of them were sweating profusely.
Looking at him sternly, Jacob said, ‘You smell like a pussy.’ ‘Yeah, and you'd know what that smelled like,’ Henry replied.
‘Shut up. Let's just chill here for a bit, okay? We'll just watch for a while.’
Henry looked around, searching for any pedestrians that might be lurking about. There was no one in sight. ‘It's kinda creepy, isn't it?’
Jacob nodded, his eyes scanning left and right like a tennis spectator. The street around them was quiet, most of the shops stood dark and empty. A few still had their display windows lit up, and these stood out among the silent rows.
‘What's the time?’ Jacob asked.
Henry consulted his watch: ‘11:20 P.M.’
‘You'd think there would be someone here by now.’ ‘Maybe they're already inside.’
‘Maybe, but…what's that sound?’ ‘What sound?’
‘There it goes again. Listen.’
Henry went silent. He could hear the dim hum of traffic from the side streets, but otherwise, the night was calm.
‘I can't hear a fucking—’
‘Shh! It's coming from the museum.’
They both fell silent and looked toward the building. The arc-sodium streetlights cast a ruddy glow over the museum; it was difficult to see much beyond a white smear in the darkness. There was noise coming from that direction so Henry eased in closer for a better look.
‘Don't.’ Jacob grabbed him by the shoulders.
‘What's the big deal? There's no one here.’
‘The deal is I told you to do everything I told you to do. Just listen for a sec.’
Henry did as he was told, massaging the sore spots where Jacob had grabbed him. The strange noise became a little louder, and he could just make out an eerie groaning. It was followed by a woman's scream.
‘What was that?’ Henry said. ‘It sounds like someone dying.’ ‘It sounds like a mummy's on the loose is what it sounds like.’ ‘Jesus.’
‘Just kidding. But I think I know what it is. Just hang five for a minute.’ He started to walk away.
‘Jacob, don't leave me here.’
‘I'll be back in a second. Don't worry.’
Henry automatically started to follow him but thought better of it. ‘Just stay put,’ Jacob yelled back at him. ‘Don't move an inch.’
Cursing his brother for being such a brave fool, Henry pinched his sides.
Hope a goddamn mummy comes around the corner and grabs him! he thought. Hope he rips his fucking dick off and—
‘Here's the problem!’ Jacob shouted.
Henry looked up, startled. Jacob was now standing by the foyer doors to the museum, staring up at the awning above and smiling. Slowly, he turned around and motioned for Henry to join him. On the way there, Henry heard the shrill cry of the woman again, this time much louder than before.
‘Betcha pissed your pants that time,’ Jacob said. ‘Cut the shit. Where's it coming from?’
‘Look up,’ he instructed.
Henry did, noticing in his peripheral vision that there was an open doorway to the right with stairs leading down.
‘Some kind of recording, I guess,’ Jacob continued.
