Chapter 9

When I enter the classroom, I place the wand near the window and tie a notecard with my name on it on a string. My mind keeps focusing on what Kiarr and Ben said about the tree and I decide to look up details on it once I finish my classes for the day.

I shuffle to my next class, Spells and Hexes and brighten when I spot Melanie on the left and she waves me over.

“What are you doing here?” I ask and give her a sideways hug before taking my seat.

“This is one of the classes I have with you.”

“Just this one?” Unable to keep the hopefulness out of my voice.

“This one, and Supernatural Studies at the end of the day.”

Excitement courses through me. I’d at least had a friend in two courses. “That’s great. I’m so glad you don’t have all necromancy classes.”

“Necromancy is my major, but I also need spells ad hexes in my repertoire.” She winks, then lowers her voice. “Any luck on removing your two ghosts?”

I shake my head. “You?”

“Not yet, but I’m still searching.”

Part of me is glad she hasn’t discovered anything yet. Which is crazy cause I’m stuck here until I can send them back to the grave. It’s not fair to them to leave them to haunt the Academy and never have anyone to talk to when I’m gone. Plus, the last thing I need is for someone to figure out what I did, and haul be back to the school. Then I’ll never get to leave.

Professor Turner wearing a silk suit breezes into the class. His blond hair is slicked back off his head. “I hope you all studied for the quiz today.”

Dread presses into my stomach. No, I hadn’t studied for anything. I hadn’t thought I would still be here this long. Not that I’d actually been here long. Only a few days. But it feels like I’ve been here weeks already. When I first came here, I believed I’d be sent back home in a day or two.

I send a pleading look to Melanie, but she gives me a pitying look.

Professor Turner passes out a booklet that feels like it’s a mini-novel. I stare at the questions, not even understanding what I’m reading:

1) What is the difference between a hex and a spell?

2) What are the typical things needed for a spell?

3) How can a witch increase the potency of a spell?

And on and on the questions go.

I scribble out under question one that a hex is a curse and a spell could be used to heal or help. But other than that. I’ve no idea.

While everyone is quiet and works on their tests, I doodle on the paper, knowing I’m already going to get a zero on this. Just what I need. Failing and having to repeat another year in this supernatural school.

At the end of the hour, I turn my empty test paper.

“How did you do?” Melanie asks.

“Aced it,” I smirk.

“Bummer.” She hikes up her bookbag. “We can study later if you like.
