Cope was trying his best to stay calm. As it turned out, Jude’s words had been somewhat prophetic. In addition to the lights being off and the landline out of service, the batteries from their cell phones were gone. When Whittier reappeared with the basket of phones, Jude had discovered the missing battery. A quick check of the others found them in a similar state.

Minerva had run to get matches and, with the help of the others, started lighting all the candles in sight. They didn’t offer a lot of light, but it was better than sitting around in the dark, waiting for the killer to pick them off one at a time.

“I’ll just drive back to town and bring detectives back with me,” Cisco said authoritatively.

“You won’t be able to get off the property,” Julian said.

“What do you mean? My car is just outside.” Cisco pointed to the front door.

“Right, but with the amount of rain falling, the road leading up here floods. None of us can leave until the storm stops and the rain drains away.”

“King has been telling me to get a new drainage system installed for the last five years, but I didn’t want to spend the money.” Minerva began crying again. Her hands were still stained with her husband’s blood.

“Do you have an evidence kit with you?” Jude asked. “We need to preserve as much as we can if it’s going to be a while until the cavalry arrives.”

“I do,” Cisco said. He walked to the front door and pulled it open. The howling wind tore the door from his hand and sent it crashing against the entryway. Cisco hurried out into the storm and vanished from sight.

“Okay, everyone?” Jude held up his hands for silence. “Let’s get you all into the sitting room. The fewer people we have traipsing over the crime scene, the better. I’ll need you there, Whittier and any other members of staff as well.”

“I’ll round them up.” Whittier headed toward the kitchen, wearing an uncertain look on his face.

“Julian, go with him. I don’t want anyone walking around alone.”

Jude wasn’t used to running a crime scene, but Cope would never know it based on the way he was barking out orders. He’d spent a lot of time working with Ronan and Fitzgibbon when they were still with the Boston Police Department and would have learned how to handle this kind of situation from them. Cope was impressed, to say the least.

“Whittier,” Jude called after the butler, “bring back ziplock bags, the gallon size if you have them.” He turned back to Cope. “We need the bags to protect King’s hands if Cisco’s kit isn’t fully stocked. He came in his personal vehicle rather than his cruiser, so the kit might not have been used in a while.”

Nodding, Julian hurried after Whittier.

As the others left the entryway, Cope started a list of who was present. He was writing on a linen dinner napkin. “We’re missing Aubrey and Ingram,” he said to Jude.
