ZOE FOUND IT HARD to focus in class. The niceties of financial modeling just did not hold her attention. Not after last night.
Stephen was right. She had experienced much more than simple heaven. Ecstatic orgasm? Yes. A body that still tingled with little happy flashes in not-so-appropriate places? Oh, yes! But what shook her to the core was the love. Total and overwhelming love that made her feel whole and so filled with joy that she could barely contain it.It kept her horribly distracted in class, and it was worse later when she was supposed to be counting bagels at work. People kept catching her staring into space and smiling. It wasn’t a full-out grin or goofy-kid happiness. This was an inner glow that she found hard to suppress. It started deep inside and filtered out by way of a soft, secret curve to her lips. Then she would get lost in memory and just stare at nothing as her body heated and her back stretched.
That was the weirdest part. In those moments, she felt just like a cat slowly waking from a long sleep. Her back would stretch, her eyes slip shut and she would want to dig her claws in something as she lengthened her spine into a feline stretch. It was as if she really were a tigress, just waking up. Except she wasn’t waking, she was staring off into space and not counting bagels. And besides, she was a dog person, not a cat person. But wow, there were times when she even felt as though she had a cat’s tail and would whip it around playfully as she walked or, worse, stretched to grab something from the top rack.
“Oooh, baby,” her coworker cooed from behind the sandwich register. “You got something fine in you last night.”
She turned to stare at Anne, a redheaded high-school basketball player who was as white as whipped cream, but somehow made her voice sound ghetto. “What are you talking about?” Zoe shot back in her best I-outrank-you voice.
Anne raised her hands in defense, slipping back into her normal flat Midwestern accent. “Hey, I’m just saying you look good today.”
Zoe arched her brow. “I’m in uniform with a ponytail. I look as good as I always do.”
Anne shook her head. “Nope. Something different. Something good. And maybe it has something to do with that fine bit of hunka-hunka sitting over there.” She gestured at the table right in front of the fire where Stephen sat.
He was dressed casually for him: dark jeans—designer—and an emerald-green sweater. His hair fell artfully forward across his brow, and he sipped his espresso with every appearance of rapture. And then he looked at her, and Zoe’s breath caught in her throat. She saw hunger there, a burning need that made the tigress in her simultaneously flex her claws and purr in delight. Against her will, her spine stretched, shoulders rolled back and down, and her lips felt dry. So she licked them and watched his eyes zero in on the motion.
